Job summary

Vonage is seeking a senior backend engineer to design and build highly concurrent, cloud‑native services. You will own architectural decisions and drive performance improvements at scale across teams.

You will work with Go, containerized applications, and modern databases, ensuring high reliability and robust testing. Collaboration and mentorship are key to success within the team and on-call support is required.

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in Go (Golang) for enterprise-grade, highly concurrent systems.
• Experience developing and maintaining scalable, distributed architectures.
• Hands-on with containerised apps and cloud-native environments.
• Experience with REST/HTTP services and database ecosystems (PostgreSQL, Redis).
• Experience with performance profiling and optimisation at scale.
• Proficiency in unit/integration/smoke testing to enable safe production releases.
• Excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical problems.

The RNE (Registration, Numbers and Enablement) group within Vonage's Foundation Engineering department works across four core product domains: Registration, Numbers, Number Intelligence, and Know Your Customer (KYC). Our senior engineers play a key role in driving technical quality and platform evolution, working on a modern cloud-native stack across both greenfield and existing systems.

What You Will Do

• Design and develop highly concurrent, distributed backend services with a focus on high availability;
• Take solid ownership of architectural contributions, driving technical decisions within and across teams;
• Lead performance optimisation efforts and proactively diagnose complex system issues;
• Design, develop and test new features, setting a high bar for quality and reliability;
• Support the release and documentation of developed features;
• Define and champion coding standards and development processes;
• Mentor and support more junior engineers within the team;
• Provide out-of-hours support as part of an on-call rota.

What You Will Bring

Essential:

• Strong programming skills in Go (Golang);
• Proven experience developing and maintaining enterprise-grade systems at scale;
• Solid experience with highly concurrent, distributed architectures and systems;
• Solid experience contributing to and driving architectural decisions;
• Experience with containerised applications and cloud-native environments;
• Experience profiling and optimising performance at scale;
• Experience building REST/HTTP based services;
• Strong experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Redis);
• Strong test suite design skills, including Unit, Integration and Smoke tests, enabling safe promotion of code to production without manual intervention;
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical problems and solutions clearly.

Nice to Have:

• Hands-on experience with AWS (SQS, SNS, DynamoDB), Kafka, Kubernetes or Terraform;
• Understanding of Continuous Delivery in cloud environments;
• General understanding of the telecommunications industry.
