Job summary

Vonage is seeking a senior backend engineer to help innovate cloud communications for businesses worldwide. You will work on a modern, cloud-native stack, focusing on highly concurrent distributed services and architecture decisions that shape the platform.

Ideally you have strong Go or Java/Spring experience, with a track record of building enterprise-scale systems, REST services, and robust testing. The role involves mentoring, on-call support, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in Go or Java/Spring Boot with a willingness to move to Go.
• Experience designing and maintaining enterprise-scale, highly concurrent distributed systems.
• Proven ability to influence architectural decisions and drive technical quality.
• Experience with containerised apps and cloud-native environments.
• Experience profiling and optimizing performance at scale.
• Experience building REST/HTTP based services.
• Strong database experience with PostgreSQL and Redis.
• Solid unit/integration/smoke testing practices and CI/CD awareness.
• Excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration.

Why This Role Matters

The RNE (Registration, Numbers and Enablement) group within Vonage's Foundation Engineering department works across four core product domains: Registration, Numbers, Number Intelligence, and Know Your Customer (KYC). Our senior engineers play a key role in driving technical quality and platform evolution, working on a modern cloud-native stack across both greenfield and existing systems.

What You Will Do

• Design and develop highly concurrent, distributed backend services with a focus on high availability;
• Take solid ownership of architectural contributions, driving technical decisions within and across teams;
• Lead performance optimisation efforts and proactively diagnose complex system issues;
• Design, develop and test new features, setting a high bar for quality and reliability;
• Support the release and documentation of developed features;
• Define and champion coding standards and development processes;
• Mentor and support more junior engineers within the team;
• Provide out-of-hours support as part of an on‑call rota.

What You Will Bring

Essential:

• Strong programming skills in Go (Golang) or deep experience with JVM technologies (Java/Spring Boot) and a strong desire to move to Go;
• Proven experience developing and maintaining enterprise‑grade systems at scale;
• Solid experience with highly concurrent, distributed architectures and systems;
• Solid experience contributing to and driving architectural decisions;
• Experience with containerised applications and cloud-native environments;
• Experience profiling and optimising performance at scale;
• Experience building REST/HTTP based services;
• Strong experience with relational and non‑relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Redis);
• Strong test suite design skills, including Unit, Integration and Smoke tests, enabling safe promotion of code to production without manual intervention;
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical problems and solutions clearly.

Nice to Have:

• Hands‑on experience with AWS (SQS, SNS, DynamoDB), Kafka, Kubernetes or Terraform;
• Understanding of Continuous Delivery in cloud environments;
• General understanding of the telecommunications industry.
