Job summary

intent is seeking an Embedded / Firmware Engineer for freelance engagements across Cortex‑A, Raspberry Pi‑class, and Cortex‑M platforms. You’ll design and bring up embedded Linux distributions and BSPs, collaborating with hardware teams to debug end-to-end from schematics to software.

The role starts on a time-and-material freelance basis, with a path to a core team role and benefits. Strong C/C++, Linux, and bootloader experience are essential, plus remote work across Europe.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of professional embedded or firmware experience.
• Strong hands-on C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with embedded Linux build systems (Yocto/Buildroot).
• Good understanding of Linux kernel, drivers, and device tree.
• CI/CD experience for embedded projects (GitHub Actions/Jenkins/GitLab CI).
• Experience with bootloaders, especially U-Boot.
• Experience with embedded constraints: timing, memory, peripherals, boot time, power.
• Ability to debug firmware/hardware-adjacent issues with JTAG/SWD, serial logs, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes.
• Reading schematics, datasheets, and technical docs.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain a custom embedded Linux distribution using Yocto or Buildroot.
• Bring up new hardware platforms with the hardware team to debug issues from schematics to software.
• Develop and maintain BSPs and bootloaders (U-Boot), and customize the Linux kernel with drivers (I2C, SPI, UART, MIPI-CSI/DSI).
• Write robust C/C++ code for system services and applications.
• Optimize boot time, memory usage, and power consumption.
• Implement and maintain security features such as Secure Boot and encrypted filesystems.
• Debug firmware and hardware-adjacent issues with appropriate tools.
• Collaborate across hardware, mobile, QA, backend, product, and client teams.
• Participate in requirements, architecture decisions, estimations, and delivery planning.
• Test firmware releases and maintain technical documentation.
• Share knowledge to improve Firmware & Hardware practices.
