Turnitin, LLC is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with a strong focus on Java and serverless technologies, complemented by frontend experience. You will help design scalable shared backend services and collaborate with cross-functional teams across Europe and the USA.

This is a remote-first role supporting a distributed engineering organization. You will mentor junior engineers, implement RESTful APIs, and contribute to CI/CD and documentation efforts to deliver high-performing educational

Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend development with Java
• Serverless experience (AWS Lambda or similar)
• Frontend experience (React, Web Components)
• Distributed systems, scalability and data modeling
• Cross-functional collaboration with Europe/USA teams
• Cloud technologies and serverless apps on AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge)
• CI/CD practice and automated testing
• Mentoring junior engineers and code reviews

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable backend services using Java and serverless tech
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven systems
• Contribute to frontend components when needed
• Improve performance and cost efficiency of services
• Collaborate with architects, product managers, and engineers
• Mentor junior developers and promote best practices
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines
• Ensure code quality with reviews and tests
• Create documentation for shared components
