Job summary

Elastic is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Performance team. You will lead architectural and code-level performance initiatives to optimize and predict Elasticsearch performance.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to unlock the full potential of our software and embed performance-first thinking into new features. You will mentor engineers, drive automation for profiling and benchmarking, and work autonomously across projects to deliver high-impact

Qualifications

Strong experience with Java and JVM internals.
Proven profiling of distributed systems and performance optimization.
Familiar with benchmarking tools and regression detection.
Experience using AI-assisted tooling to accelerate optimization.
Ability to collaborate across functions and teams autonomously.

Responsibilities

Own performance initiatives from architecture to production, driving high-impact optimizations.
Develop performance models and methodologies for distributed systems.
Drive strategies to keep Elasticsearch performant, scalable, and predictable.
Profile bottlenecks in logging, metrics, vector search, and ES|QL.
Mentor engineers and promote a performance-aware culture.
