Job summary

econsulting is seeking an experienced Azure data architect to take over an existing data platform, define its target architecture, and enable GenAI-based capabilities using Cosmos DB and Synapse.

You will map the current state, design a scalable data layer for GenAI apps, and document the architecture so engineering teams can start implementing quickly while keeping a long-term vision in focus.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in a similar Azure data/architecture role.
• Proven Cosmos DB data modeling and cost optimization.
• Hands-on RAG/agentic data projects with documented history.
• Experience with Synapse pipelines, Spark and SQL pools.
• Knowledge of Databricks, ADLS/Lakehouse, and architecture decisions.

Responsibilities

• Assess current Azure data platform and create a roadmap with quick wins and long-term goals.

Job description

We're looking for someone to take over an existing Azure data platform, bring structure to it, and design its target architecture, including support for GenAI-based solutions. This role suits someone who enjoys getting up to speed quickly in a new environment, giving teams concrete guidance, and thinking long-term at the same time.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess the current Azure data platform and prepare a roadmap, separating quick wins from the target architecture.
• Create architecture documentation and diagrams that engineering teams can start implementing within the first weeks of the project.
• Design the data layer for GenAI applications (RAG, agentic solutions), covering ingestion, data preparation, storage, and retrieval, using Cosmos DB.
• Design flexible, metadata-driven ingestion supporting multiple sources, including documents and unstructured data.
• Recommend the right tooling (including Databricks, Synapse, and Azure Data Factory) based on the project's actual needs.

Required Skills and Experience

• At least 5 years of experience on a similar position.
• Proven hands‑on experience combining Azure data architecture, Cosmos DB, Synapse, and production RAG/agentic solutions, clearly reflected in your project history (with dates).
• In‑depth Cosmos DB expertise: data modeling, partition key design, RU and cost optimization, scaling, and Change Feed.
• At least one production (not POC) RAG or agentic project where you personally owned the data layer, including chunking, embeddings, and vector search.
• Practical Synapse experience (Pipelines, Spark, Serverless and Dedicated SQL pools), including making architectural decisions yourself.
• Experience with Databricks, SQL Managed Instance / T‑SQL, ADLS / Lakehouse architecture, and Azure Functions.

Nice to have

• Ability to compare Synapse with Fabric, Databricks, and Azure SQL and recommend the right fit.
• Experience modernizing legacy data platforms.
