The Position

AI Architect - RDT Artificial Intelligence

This is a rare opportunity to shape the architectural foundation of enterprise AI at one of the world’s leading healthcare and diagnostics companies. As AI Architect within RDT Artificial Intelligence, you will hold strategic and engineering ownership of Roche’s enterprise AI technology stack - defining how AI is built, governed, and scaled across the organization.

This role serves as the central technical visionary connecting advanced agentic workflows, traditional AI and ML platforms, and core infrastructure. You will architect a secure, robust, and highly scalable enterprise platform ecosystem that enables diverse teams across Roche to deploy cutting-edge AI capabilities safely, compliantly, and cost-effectively - at global scale.

More than a platform role, this is a mission to prevent technological fragmentation and agentic chaos: to establish the digital guardrails and architectural principles that allow AI to proliferate responsibly across one of the world’s most complex regulated enterprises. You will translate strategic vision into concrete blueprints, and blueprints into production reality.

The Opportunity

1. Enterprise AI Architecture & Taxonomy

• Capability-Based Reference Architecture: Architect and evolve the enterprise AI reference architecture based on logical capabilities and flows, maintaining vendor neutrality and enabling multi-platform configurations rather than forcing monolithic alignment.

• Platform & Application Taxonomy: Govern the enterprise AI landscape, clearly demarcating developer-facing platforms (e.g., managed ML environments, API gateways, enterprise retrieval services) from ready-to-use business applications - ensuring every team can navigate the landscape without duplication or confusion.

• Advanced Technology Integration: Lead the technical design, proof of concepts, and production implementation of core developer enablement modules, including the AI Gateway, PI/PII detection pipelines, and advanced content safety layers.

2. Infrastructure Engineering & Compute Operationalisation

• High-Compute Software Framework: Take technical ownership of designing, validating, and establishing the production-ready software layer - orchestration, monitoring, job scheduling, and cost tracking - required to operationalise high-compute environments such as dedicated GPU infrastructure (e.g., NVIDIA AI Factory).

• Hyperscaler Strategy: Architect cloud-native multi-region endpoints across AWS, Azure, and GCP, ensuring optimal workload placement for model serving and training.

• Vector & Data Layer Strategy: Define structural standards for data and context layer integration, utilising specialised databases (e.g., Qdrant Cloud for long-term memory, PostgreSQL pgvector, MongoDB Atlas) linked natively into agent frameworks.

• Agentic Strategy: Translate the vision of an AI-augmented workforce into a structured agentic architecture - balancing speed of delivery with the stability, compliance, and safety controls required in a regulated enterprise.

3. Governance, Traceability & Security

• End-to-End Traceability Framework: Enforce enterprise invocation standards using structured Correlation IDs (business journey mapping), Trace IDs (independent agent execution), and Span IDs (sub-flows and tool calls) across the AI Gateway - making every AI interaction auditable and debuggable.

• Agent Governance Architecture: Author and execute technical pre-deployment sign-offs, agent identity propagation standards, and lifecycle control mechanisms for autonomous, semi-autonomous, and vendor-embedded agents - establishing the digital guardrails that govern how agents are deployed at Roche.

• Risk & Compliance Partnership: Work closely with the AI Risks & Ethics team to implement auditable intake processes and ensure compliance with global security and privacy frameworks.

4. Technical Leadership & Ecosystem Influence

• AI Architecture Network: Serve as a foundational leader of the formal AI Architecture Network, chairing capability reviews, architecture discussions, and exception boards. Act as the primary technical reference for architects across the network - guiding others in resolving highly complex cross-functional challenges.

• Vendor & Partner Governance: Provide rigorous technical validation for strategic platform partners (e.g., AWS, Microsoft, Anthropic, OpenAI, and AI observability and orchestration vendors), ensuring licence optimisation and data residency compliance at a global scale.

Who You Are

Experience

• 10+ years of comprehensive experience in software architecture and engineering, including 3+ years leading enterprise-scale AI, Machine Learning, or Generative AI platform initiatives.

• Demonstrated experience architecting core middleware, gateways, and backend systems handling complex data routing, access control, and observability at scale.

• A track record of delivering high-performance technical environments within regulated industries such as Biotech, Pharma, or Healthcare.

Domain Expertise

• AI/ML Architecture: Deep understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs), RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and traditional ML model lifecycle architectures.

• Cloud & Infrastructure: Advanced expertise in cloud-native paradigms, container orchestration, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and hardware orchestration frameworks including GPU compute environments.

• Data Architecture: Strong proficiency across vector similarity search engines (e.g., Qdrant, AWS OpenSearch), cloud data warehouses (Snowflake), and event-driven data pipeline architectures.

• Engineering Standards: Advanced Python capability combined with enterprise DevOps mastery, including robust CI/CD, containerised workload monitoring, and API security.

Leadership & Mindset

• Executive Presence: Proven ability to present technical strategies to senior leadership, influence cross-functional investments, and navigate matrixed organisational environments with confidence.

• Federated Leadership: Ability to lead and influence networks of architects and engineers without direct authority - inspiring diverse stakeholders to act with a unified voice and shared architectural vision.

• Enterprise Mindset: A commitment to enterprise-wide coherence, prioritising long‑term platform health and reuse over short‑term functional optimisation.

• Education: B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a highly quantitative field.

• Languages: C1+ English language proficiency.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected salary range for this position, based on the primary location of Warsaw Grafit is 280,000.00 PLN - 520,000.00 PLN. Final compensation will be determined by a number of factors, including your skills, experience, qualifications, and location. In addition to base pay, this role may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus with a target of 20% subject to both individual and company performance.
