Job summary

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in teaching, tutoring, or community work is preferred, but fresh graduates are welcome.
  • Must be a resident of the same or nearby village for community trust.

Job Description: Non-Formal Education (NFE) Facilitator

Position Title: Non-Formal Education (NFE) Facilitator. Location: District Tharparkar, and Umerkot. Reports to: District Project Officer. Type of Position: Contractual / Project-based.

1. Organizational Context

Thardeep Rural development Programme (TRDP) works to improve literacy, life skills, and access to education for out-of-school children (OOSC), particularly girls. The NFE Facilitator is the frontline agent of change, responsible for establishing and running a Non-Formal Education Center/second Shift Schools.

2. Key Responsibilities & Duties
A. Teaching & Facilitation (Core Duty):
  • Conduct daily non-formal education sessions for a multi-grade, multi-age group (typically children aged 10-16 or adolescents/women).
  • Implement condensed, accelerated learning to achieve basic literacy (reading, writing) and numeracy.
  • Integrate life skills education (health, hygiene, nutrition, child rights, child protection, climate awareness) into daily lessons.
  • Use interactive, play-based, and gender-sensitive teaching methodologies.
  • Develop low-cost/no-cost teaching aids from locally available materials.
B. Community Mobilization & Engagement:
  • Identify and enroll out-of-school learners, with a special focus on girls.
  • Build trust and rapport with community leaders, parents, and local elders to gain support for the learning center.
  • Conduct regular meetings with Village Education Committees (VEC) or School Management Committees (SMCs) to ensure community ownership.
  • Sensitize the community on the importance of education, especially for girls, and address socio-cultural barriers.
C. Administrative & Logistical Tasks:
  • Maintain daily attendance registers, progress charts, and learner portfolios.
  • Manage the distribution and safe-keeping of learning materials (books, slates, kits) if provided by the organization.
  • Ensure the learning space is clean, safe, and conducive for learning, especially for female learners.
  • Submit regular activity reports and data (attendance, progress) to the supervisor.
  • Create a protective, inclusive, and encouraging environment for all learners.
  • Identify and refer cases of child protection concerns (e.g., child labor, early marriage, abuse) through established organizational channels.
  • Promote principles of equality, non-discrimination, and tolerance in the classroom.
3. Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Graduates or at least have passed intermediate.
  • Language: Fluency in Sindhi (both spoken and written) is non-negotiable. Working knowledge of Urdu. English is an asset.
  • Residency: Must be a resident of the same or adjacent village/UC. This is critical for community acceptance and continuity, especially for female facilitators teaching girls.
  • Experience: Prior experience in teaching, tutoring, or community work is preferred. Fresh graduates with a passion for community service are encouraged.
  • Skills: Basic numeracy and literacy teaching skills. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Mindset: Respect for local culture, patience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to working with the poor and marginalized.
Highly Desirable:
  • Gender Consideration: For centers targeting girls, female facilitators are mandatory.
  • Understanding of the local socio-cultural dynamics and power structures.
  • Familiarity with child-centered and participatory learning approaches.
