Job summary

Datum Labs is seeking a senior data engineering leader to own delivery quality for client data platforms, from ingestion to cloud infrastructure. You will stay hands-on in pipelines and PRs, raise the technical bar, and help scale the team.

You will mentor engineers and analysts, drive hiring, and manage client communications with rapid responses. The role emphasizes agentic AI delivery and shaping how we deliver, not just operating existing systems.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in data engineering or software engineering, with 2+ years leading or managing an engineering team.
• Hands-on experience building and shipping agentic AI systems.
• Still comfortable reviewing PRs and debugging pipeline/warehouse issues.
• Experience delivering client-facing data platforms under real deadlines (ingestion, transformation with dbt, orchestration with Dagster).
• Cloud infra and CI/CD experience is a strong plus (Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions).
• Excellent async, written communication in a distributed Slack-native team.

Responsibilities

• Own delivery quality and timelines on assigned client data platform teams; be hands-on when delivery is at risk.
• Run team rituals (standups, sprint planning, retros) and remove blockers.
• Mentor and grow data engineers and analysts; scale onboarding and performance management.
• Lead the technical hiring loop for data engineering and analytics roles.
• Communicate with clients on the data platform build; respond to client queries under 1 hour.

Job description

We are a data engineering and analytics company. We build data platforms for our customers: ingestion, warehousing, transformation, the infrastructure underneath it. We are changing our core to agentic AI, so this is not a caretaker role. You help us rebuild how we deliver, not just run what exists today. You own delivery quality, raise the technical bar, grow the team. You stay hands‑on - in the pipeline, in the PR - not just in meetings.

What you'll own

• Delivery quality and timelines on assigned client data platform teams. If delivery is at risk you get hands‑on, you don't just escalat it.
• Team rituals - standups, sprint/ticket planning, retros. Remove blockers before they cost a sprint.
• Mentorship and growth of data engineers and analysts. Onboarding, coaching, performance management. 10x the mentorship we do today.
• Technical hiring loop for data engineering and analytics roles - screening, interviewing, final call.
• Client‑facing communication on the data platform build. Answer to client should be under 1 hour.

Mandatory PR review on every repo. CODEOWNERS. Branch protection. Conventional commits. CI/CD as standard. Same rules for dbt, Dagster, pipeline code. This is not a checklist, this is the culture we hire into. You hold the whole team to it, including yourself.

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years in data engineering or software engineering, 2+ years leading or managing an engineering team.
• Hands‑on experience building and shipping agentic AI systems. Required, not a nice‑to‑have. This role is core to changing how we deliver, not maintaining what exists today.
• Still comfortable reviewing PRs and debugging pipeline or warehouse issues yourself. This is not a purely administrative role.
• Experience delivering client‑facing data platforms under real deadlines – ingestion, transformation (dbt), orchestration (Dagster), the cloud infra underneath.
• Cloud infra and CI/CD (Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions) is a strong plus given overlap with our DevOps hiring.
• Excellent async, written communication. We are a Slack‑native, distributed team.
