Overview
Warehouse workers or warehouse associates, are responsible for the logistics of receiving, storing, processing, and sending inventory. Their duties include:
- Receiving and storing: Receiving deliveries, checking for damaged or missing items, and storing goods
- Picking and packing: Picking and packing orders accurately and according to customer requirements
- Loading and unloading: Loading and unloading deliveries, and loading orders onto trucks and shipping containers
- Organizing: Organizing incoming stock and putting labels on outgoing parcels
- Inventory: Conducting inventory checks, reporting discrepancies, and managing stock levels
- Safety: Maintaining a clean and safe working environment, adhering to health and safety regulations
- Equipment operation: Safely and efficiently operating warehouse equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks
- Communication: Collaborating with team members, communicating effectively in person, over the telephone, and in writing
- Data entry: Entering data into computer systems to keep stock inventory up to date
- Cleaning: Cleaning delivery vans and preparing them for the next day\'s shift
Warehouse assistants need a variety of qualifications, including:
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred
- Licenses and certifications: Depending on the state, a license or certification may be required to operate heavy machinery, such as forklifts and pallet jacks
- Communication skills: Warehouse assistants should have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Physical strength: Warehouse assistants perform physical labor, such as handling and transporting heavy goods, so they should be physically fit
- Computer skills: Warehouse assistants should be familiar with inventory software and computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Organizational skills: Warehouse assistants should be able to organize their time and workload
