Job Summary
The Tax Technician is responsible for preparing accurate and timely federal and state tax filings for individuals and business clients. This role requires strong attention to detail, a deep understanding of tax laws, and the ability to work collaboratively within a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate technical proficiency, clear communication skills, and a proactive approach to client service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Accurately prepare and file individual and business federal and state tax returns in compliance with applicable US laws and deadlines.
- Analyze financial statements, reports, and supporting documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to tax preparation.
- Interpret and apply current IRS codes and state‑specific tax laws to client cases, ensuring full compliance and minimizing the risk of audits or penalties.
- Identify available deductions, credits, and tax‑saving strategies for clients while maintaining legal and ethical standards.
- Clearly explain complex tax concepts, filing outcomes, and planning strategies to clients in a professional and accessible manner.
- Remain up to date on changes in federal and state tax legislation, adapting to new procedures, technologies, and best practices as necessary.
- Work collaboratively with other tax professionals, accountants, and departments to ensure accurate filings and deliver high‑quality client service.
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA or active pursuit of CPA certification is highly preferred.
- 1–2 years’ experience in an accounting firm with solid accounting and tax knowledge
- Proficient in Drake Tax Software, with additional experience in other tax research tools considered an advantage.
- Experience preparing multi‑state returns and managing complex client portfolios.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to present financial information clearly to non‑technical audiences.
- Flexibility to work extended hours during peak tax seasons to meet client and filing deadlines.
- Interest in growing within the firm and developing long‑term client relationships.
- Proficient with Xero, Hubdoc, QuickBooks, or similar accounting software
- Strong customer service and communication skills
