We're looking for an experienced Underwriting Manager to lead our Group Medical, Personal Accident (GPA), and Travel Insurance underwriting function. This role combines hands-on underwriting, people leadership, and commercial partnership.

YOUR ROLE
As our Lead Underwriter, you'll lead a team of six underwriters while remaining hands-on in underwriting Group Medical, Personal Accident, and Travel Insurance risks, providing technical guidance and partnering with the Sales Team to support Brokers and their agents through complex negotiations and underwriting decisions.
Lead Complex Underwriting Decisions
- Assess risks, determine appropriate pricing, coverage, and policy terms for corporate clients.
- Provide technical guidance and final underwriting direction on challenging cases.
Lead and Develop the Underwriting Team
- Manage, coach, and develop the team; fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Ensure underwriting decisions are consistent, timely, and commercially sound.
Partner with Sales and Brokers
- Work alongside a dedicated Sales team; represent the underwriting function during high-value client and broker discussions by confidently explaining underwriting decisions, negotiating terms, and providing technical expertise.
- Monitor portfolio profitability and recommend strategies to improve long-term performance.
- Analyse claims experience, utilisation trends, and emerging risks to support sound underwriting decisions.
- Collaborate with Reinsurance, Claims, and Operations teams to achieve business objectives.
Manage Third-Party Partners
- Ensure quality service delivery and strong operational performance.
- Work with partners to continuously improve the customer experience.
Ensure Strong Governance
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and internal underwriting standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen underwriting governance and operational excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong knowledge of group medical and employee benefits underwriting.
- Experience in risk assessment, pricing strategies, and portfolio management.
- Experience reviewing claims experience and healthcare utilization to inform underwriting decisions.
- Understanding of reinsurance structures and underwriting governance.
- Experience managing Third-Party Administrators (TPAs), including contract management and SLA governance.
- 8-10 years of underwriting experience within the insurance industry.
- At least 3 years leading an underwriting team while remaining actively involved in hands-on underwriting.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
