Job summary

Microchip Technology Inc. is seeking a Failure Analysis Technician in the Philippines to support customer returns and engineering evaluations. You will perform both non-destructive and destructive FA techniques, conduct material analysis, and verify electrical functionality with basic bench tools.

You will generate detailed FA reports, work with cross-functional teams, and help improve response times while adhering to safety and 5S standards in a busy lab environment.

Qualifications

• At least 4 years work experience in FA or similar discipline.
• Basic understanding of failure analysis flow.
• Basic knowledge of non-destructive and destructive FA techniques.
• Basic knowledge of operating failure analysis tools and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of semiconductor Fab, Assembly and Test process flow.
• Basic knowledge of chemical handling safety.
• Competent in electrical testing and physical FA techniques.

Responsibilities

• Provide failure analysis to support customer returns, qualifications and engineering evaluations.
• Perform non-destructive FA (visual inspection, x-ray, SAM) and destructive FA (soldering, deballing, decapsulation).
• Conduct material analysis (SEM/EDX) and electrical verification with fixtures and boards.
• Generate FA reports and present findings using MS Office tools.
• Collaborate with FA engineer and cross-functional teams to improve response time.
• Observe safety, 5S, and proper use of FA lab equipment and consumables.

Job Description

A failure analysis technician is responsible in providing failure analysis to support customer returns, qualifications, and other engineering evaluations. Collaboration with FA requestors and other cross-functional teams is also required. He/she must observe proper housekeeping, environmental, health, and safety protocols while doing his/her tasks.

• Support customer returns, qualifications, and other engineering evaluations that require failure analysis.
• Perform non-destructive analysis such as optical visual inspection, x-ray, and scanning acoustic microscopy.
• Perform destructive analysis such as soldering/desoldering, lead conditioning, deballing/reballing, mechanical/chemical decapsulation, package/die level deprocessing, cross-sectioning, and other FA techniques available in the laboratory.
• Conduct material analysis such as SEM/EDX, cross-sectioning, wire bond mechanical testing and other material analysis capabilities that the FA lab may acquire in the future.
• Perform competent electrical verification using curve tracer and/or basic bench tools. Perform competent application board testing with minimal guidance.
• Perform competent visual/mechanical package level failure analysis with minimal guidance.
• Perform competent open/short and parametric full failure analysis with minimal guidance.
• Perform competent fault isolation with minimal guidance.
• Perform competent die level physical failure analysis procedures with minimal guidance.
• Provide first level analysis on functional or complex electrical rejects with minimal guidance.
• Generate failure analysis reports using MCHP on-line Failure Analysis databases and create presentation using Microsoft Office applications.
• Work closely with FA engineer and customer to meet and improve the response time.
• Interface and collaborate with other MCHP cross-functional groups most especially with Assembly, Reliability, Test Product, Quality Assurance, and customer support.
• Meet and drive improvements on failure analysis key performance indicators.
• May develop and implement new failure analysis methods if necessary.
• Observe proper and responsible use of all FA laboratory equipment, hardwares, consumables, and workstations and report any problem encountered timely.
• FA focal person responsible in tools/equipment 5S and improvements and coordination with FAREL Equipment group for consumables & spare parts procurements, repair, and maintenance.
• Observe safety and health protocols and housekeeping during day-to-day failure analysis activities.
• Attend trainings required for the job and by the MCHP company.
• Supports and implements Environmental Management System (EMS) and Quality Management System (QMS).

Requirements/Qualifications

Education Level

At least a graduate of technical/vocational course

Working experience

At least 4 years work experience in FA or similar discipline.

• Basic understanding of failure analysis flow.
• Basic knowledge and skill in performing non-destructive and destructive FA techniques.
• Basic knowledge and skill in operating failure analysis tools and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of basic semiconductor Fab, Assembly and Test process flow.
• Basic knowledge of chemical handling safety.
• Knowledge is more competent in electrical testing.
• Competent skill in physical failure analysis techniques.
