About the Role

We are seeking several Specialists Compliance Due Diligence to undertake due diligence (“DD”) on BHP third parties. DD is a critical control covering corruption, sanctions, modern slavery, and money laundering risks within the BHP value chain. These roles form part of the Ethics, Compliance and Human Rights sub function within External Affairs and will be co- located within the GBS office in Manila. The roles are important in ensuring BHP is working in ways consistent with our Charter Values and in meeting its regulatory obligations and public commitments.

As Specialist Compliance DD, your primary purpose is to provide judgement and expertise through the execution of DD processes and controls. The DD is focused on financial crime (corruption, sanctions, money laundering, counter terrorist financing) and modern slavery risk mitigation.

  • Undertaking DD assessments on a variety of Commercial third parties to assess their ability to comply with relevant laws, regulations, and BHPs internal policies drawing on a variety of sources
  • Applying sound judgement and expertise in financial crime and modern slavery risk assessments within the third party review process
  • Acting as the key DD interface for internal stakeholders, including the GBS Master Data team and Commercial team members on DD related matters
  • Supports ad hoc due diligence research projects and / or investigations
  • Providing ad hoc compliance advice to the broader Compliance and Commercial teams
  • Identifies and reports to line management issues or improvement opportunities in DD systems
  • Monitoring any outstanding conditions of approval and follow through until closure
  • Assist in the development and implementation of due diligence procedures and best practices.
  • Tracks and assesses emerging trends and capabilities in data, technology, and DD (including AI-related developments) to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
  • Conducts review of sanctions-related blocks and DD and unblocks as appropriate.
About You

The successful candidate will ideally possess work experience in due diligence or related role (including legal counsel, auditor, or investigator) with a focus on corruption, sanctions, money laundering, counter terrorist financing and modern slavery risk mitigation. Other important skills are outlined below:

  • Excellent judgment and analytical capability including the ability to assimilate data from a variety of sources and make sense of the content.
  • Effective work planning skills and interpersonal skills.
  • A genuine interest in developing a long-term career with BHP.
  • Commercial acumen and some knowledge of the value chains of BHP.
  • Ability to assess data, follow leads and ask questions and learn about new industry sectors.
  • Experience in a law firm, accounting firm or large foreign corporate is preferred.
  • Business level fluency in a second language other than English (for example Spanish or Chinese) would be an advantage.
  • The person must be comfortable in applying judgement in new / ambiguous situations sometimes with limited or conflicting data.

The successful candidate is required to report onsite 5 days/week for the next 12-18 months.
