Job summary

Backblaze External Website is seeking a Software Engineer III - B2 Object Storage to design and implement APIs for managing object lifecycles. Ideal candidates should have 4+ years of Java programming experience, especially with distributed systems.

You will contribute to the reliability of our systems and collaborate in a remote setting while maintaining clear communication. Join our innovative team and help drive cloud storage solutions for our customers.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of server-side Java programming experience.
• Experience writing software for distributed systems, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout.
• Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code).
• Agile and scrum experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain B2 and S3-compatible APIs.
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to clear design documents.
• Instrument services, develop metrics, define meaningful SLIs/SLOs.
• Actively participate in on-call rotation to determine incident root causes.

What You'll Do

You will work on B2 APIs and subsystems that allow our customers and integrations to upload objects, manage object lifecycles, track usage, and interact with our billing and storage systems. You will help build new features, improve the scalability of our systems, and build internal observability tooling.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain B2 and S3-compatible APIs to ensure correctness, performance, and backward compatibility for a large base of external customers and integrations.
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to clear design documents.
• Instrument services, develop metrics, define meaningful SLIs/SLOs, and drive reliability improvements.
• Actively participate in on-call rotation to help determine incident root causes and identify follow-up remediation items.

The Right Fit

• 4+ years of server-side Java programming experience.
• Experience writing software for distributed systems, including design, implementation, testing, and rollout.
• Communicates proactively in a remote environment by keeping the team informed, surfacing blockers early, and moving work forward.
