Responsibilities

• Provide expert-level administration and support for Exchange Online and Defender.
• Design, manage and optimize enterprise email architecture across cloud/hybrid/on-prem environments.
• Manage mail routing, connectors, gateways and SMTP relay infrastructure.
• Configure DNS/email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS).
• Secure mail transport, encryption, anti-phishing, threat protection and incident response.
• Support mailboxes, distribution groups, and mail-enabled objects.
• Assist client connectivity, calendaring and critical notifications.
• Monitor service health, performance, and analytics; use dashboards for reliability.
• Identify repetitive work and implement automation and self-healing workflows.
• Develop AI-assisted incident triage and knowledge-management capabilities.

The Position

Join Boehringer Ingelheim’s Global Collaboration and Event Technology – Messaging team and help transform enterprise messaging services. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will lead the delivery and support of secure, scalable, and reliable messaging solutions while driving data-driven, automated, and AI-enabled operations across a global environment. This role combines technical expertise, operational leadership, and innovation to enhance user experience and service performance worldwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide expert-level administration and support for Exchange Online and Microsoft Defender.
• Design, manage, and optimize enterprise email architecture across cloud-based, hybrid, and on-premises environments.
• Manage mail routing, transport, message delivery, connectors, gateways and SMTP relay infrastructure
• Manage messaging-related DNS and domain configurations, including email authentication through SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS, and TLS reporting.
• Secure mail transport and manage message encryption, anti-phishing, anti-spoofing, threat protection, and incident response.
• Manage shared and functional mailboxes, distribution groups, dynamic distribution groups, and mail-enabled directory objects.
• Support client connectivity, mobile messaging, calendaring, critical notifications, and communication integrations.
• Monitoring, message tracing, service health, capacity, performance, reporting and operational analytics
• Use operational data, dashboards and service-health indicators to improve reliability, transparency and decision making.
• Identify repetitive work and implement controlled automation, orchestration and self-healing operational workflows.
• Develop practical AI-assisted capabilities for incident triage, knowledge retrieval, troubleshooting, anomaly identification, root cause analysis and operational reporting.
• Measure outcomes such as reduced manual effort, faster resolution, improved service stability and better support experience.

Requirements:

• Strong experience supporting enterprise messaging and communication services in a complex, globally distributed environment.
• Demonstrated ability to perform System Lead, System Lead Delegate or Subject Matter Expert responsibilities.
• Understanding of data management, generative AI, AI agents or intelligent operations, with the ability to translate operational needs into practical use cases.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, communication and stakeholder-management skills.

Desired Skills & Qualifications

• Solid knowledge of mail flow, messaging security, identity and directory dependencies, DNS, encryption and service monitoring.
• Experience with scripting, APIs, workflow automation, operational analytics and continuous process improvement.
• Fluent professional English and the ability to collaborate effectively across regions, cultures and time zones.
• Experience in regulated or security-sensitive enterprise environments.
• Experience designing operational dashboards, automated remediation or knowledge-management solutions.
• Relevant certifications or formal training in messaging, cloud infrastructure, security, automation, data or AI.
