Job summary

Amentum seeks a Plant Nursery Worker to support a US Navy program on Diego Garcia. You will cultivate, maintain, and monitor plants, shrubs, and trees for landscaping and greening projects across the island.

The role requires outdoor work, ability to lift and perform physical labor, and compliance with safety and medical requirements for deployment. High school diploma and basic plant care knowledge are required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Seeding, growing, and maintaining plants to ensure optimal growth and health.
  • Performing daily plant care tasks such as watering, pruning, fertilizing, potting, and weeding as required.
  • Identifying and addressing signs of plant disease, pests, or decay, and ensuring corrective actions promptly.
  • Ensuring replacement of dead or diseased plants within 48 hours of discovery.
  • Transplanting plants, shrubs, and trees to required locations across Diego Garcia using proper techniques to promote survival and healthy growth.
  • Assisting with the loading, unloading, and transporting of plants and related materials to various locations around the island.
  • Monitoring greenhouse and nursery conditions (humidity, light, temperature) to ensure proper growth environments.
  • Preparing soil, planters, and garden areas for seeding, transplanting, or landscaping projects.
  • Maintaining greenhouse and nursery tools, equipment, and facilities to ensure a clean and safe working environment.
  • Keeping detailed records of plant inventory, care schedules, transplantation activities, and completed maintenance tasks.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned consistent with the position.

Amentum is seeking aPlant Nursery Workerto support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. ThePlant Nursery Workeris responsible for cultivating, maintaining, and ensuring the health and vitality of plants, trees, and shrubs needed for landscaping and greening projects. These tasks will be performed outdoors or in greenhouses in support of the overall appearance and environmental needs across Diego Garcia.

Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge or experience in horticulture, landscaping, or plant cultivation.

  • Basic understanding of plant care techniques, including seeding, watering, fertilizing, and pruning methods.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labor such as lifting, digging, bending, and carrying heavy loads.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills to ensure efficient handling of tasks and scheduling.

  • Employees must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.

  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.

  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working in greenhouses, plant nurseries, or landscaping projects.

  • Knowledge of tropical plant species and their care.

  • Familiarity with pest management practices, irrigation systems, and greenhouse management.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
