Job description

Position Summary

The Buyer is responsible for expanding and strengthening the Mexico-based supply base for automotive parts by identifying new suppliers, leading end-to-end supplier onboarding and eligibility assessment, and executing sourcing/program management activities for vehicles produced in Mexico. The role partners closely with Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, Logistics, Finance, and Legal to deliver competitive commercial awards while ensuring suppliers meet quality, delivery, and compliance expectations.

Key Objectives
  • Grow and diversify the Mexico supply base to improve competitiveness and optimize cost for purchased components and services. Manage new supplier onboarding and certification, ensuring suppliers meet required eligibility and assessment standards.
  • Lead sourcing program management activities for Mexico-built vehicles (“Mx to Mx” program management), aligning sourcing timing and deliverables with vehicle program milestones.
  • Support other buyers and global commodity teams by providing Mexico market intelligence and local supplier options to achieve best-cost outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
  • New Supplier Identification & Development (Mexico Focus)
  • Proactively identify, screen, and qualify potential Mexico-based suppliers aligned to commodity strategy and manufacturing footprint needs.
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of candidate suppliers through market research, industry networks, plant/cluster mapping, and collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Engage potential investors/suppliers to develop Mexico commodity capability where gaps exist (localization opportunities, new capacity, or technical capability expansion).
  • Coordinate supplier discovery activities (intro meetings, RFIs, NDA initiation, capability reviews) and maintain supplier profiles and documentation.
  • Supplier Eligibility / New Supplier Assessment Leadership
  • Lead the Supplier Pre-Assessment Process (SPA) to evaluate suitability of supplier manufacturing locations for specific programs and material groups.
  • Initiate and coordinate New Supplier Assessment requests, ensure required forms/data are complete, and archive/retrieve assessment results per work instruction.
  • Partner with Supplier Quality and Engineering to ensure assessments cover core quality planning and execution controls (e.g., process control, PFMEA, control plan alignment, containment, escalation, LPA).
  • Drive closure of assessment findings with suppliers (action plans, timing, follow-up validations), escalating risks as needed.
  • Coordinate the financial assessment of new suppliers.
  • Sourcing Execution & Commercial Management
  • Manage resourcing/sourcing activities from source package creation through execution, including RFQ coordination, supplier communications, and recommendation preparation.
  • Support negotiations and develop sourcing recommendations consistent with governance and delegation of authority (DoA), partnering with regional/global stakeholders.
  • Coordinate cross-functional inputs required for supplier selection (engineering feasibility, capacity, logistics flows, program timing, risk assessments).
  • Program Management for Mexico Vehicle Production Sourcing
  • Perform purchasing program management activities for vehicles produced in Mexico by coordinating sourcing deliverables, timing, and readiness gates across multiple commodities and plants.
  • Track sourcing milestones and ensure supplier industrialization plans align with program requirements (tooling readiness, PPAP timing, launch support).
  • Provide regular status reporting and risk/issue management to stakeholders (constraints, timing conflicts, open actions).
  • Cost Competitiveness & Support to Other Buyers
  • Support other buyers and commodity teams in identifying cost-effective Mexico-based suppliers, including local representation for global teams without Mexico presence.
  • Contribute to cost reduction initiatives for direct material by identifying localization/resourcing opportunities and supporting implementation with plant and purchasing teams.
  • Provide Mexico supplier market benchmarks, should-cost inputs (where available), and commercial insights to improve negotiation outcomes.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (Business, Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, or related).
  • 3 years experience in automotive purchasing/sourcing and supplier management (direct materials strongly preferred).
  • Strong English proficiency (written and spoken).
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional workstreams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with quality system expectations used in supplier assessments (e.g., PFMEA/control plan discipline, containment, LPA concepts).
  • Program management experience supporting vehicle programs or industrialization/launch readiness.
