Job summary

Dyson Institute seeks a Lead Design Engineer to design and deliver market-leading products for the global market. The role requires independent contribution with deep discipline expertise, strong stakeholder communication, and a track record of delivering designs to time, cost and specification.

You will drive for results, plan risks, manage prototypes and collaborate across global teams to continuously improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Degree with a strong track record in designing plastic, rubber or metal components.
  • Able to plan and prioritize tasks by risk, maturity and interdependencies.
  • Lead a project team or contribute as an individual, delivering on time, cost and specs.
  • Self-driven with ability to strategize and plan according to business needs.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD and 2D drawings with GD&T and tolerance stacks.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and measurement methods is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver product designs and assemblies to production on time, cost, quality and specification.
  • Plan and prioritize tasks based on risk, resolution, maturity and interdependencies.
  • Review and approve CAD drawings, BOMs and technical specifications including tolerance analysis.
  • Build functional prototype products suitable for testing, review and demonstration.
  • Lead sustaining activities to improve quality and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with other leads and global teams to ensure timely inputs.

Lead Design Engineer Overview

In order to do this, our Lead Design Engineers are challenged to develop products that meet or exceed the technical specification, cost and time requirements set. Lead Design Engineers are expected to drive for results using a flexible, challenging and diligent approach.

About the role

Lead Design Engineers (LDE) have been recognized as an independent contributor, possessing an in-depth expertise of a discipline and acting as a key source of knowledge to the rest of the team. It is essential for LDE to understand the needs of key stakeholders and communicate effectively in all directions.

LDE is also expected to build up the team knowledge and deliver on time through the team an assembly or a function of a project.

Specifically, a Lead Design Engineer must:
  • Deliver product design & assemblies to production on time, on cost, on quality and on specification.
  • Robustly plan and prioritize tasks based on risk level, resolution, maturity and interdependency of tasks.
  • Have a clear understanding of the problem at hand and specify the design requirements with clear, specific and measurable objectives.
  • Work on high-risk engineering problems, de-risking them with good design considerations and documentation.
  • Provide clear guidance, set goals, and effectively delegate tasks.
  • Fosters collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Facilitate and influence technical discussion or reviews with Technical Leads, Engineering Managers & head of Department.
  • Review and approved detailed design specifications such as 3D models, CAD drawings, Bill of Materials and Technical Specifications, including tolerance stack analysis and wide range of design for X considerations.
  • Manage the building of functional prototype products suitable for testing, review, and demonstration.
  • Plan and review analysis on test failures and develop efficient solutions.
  • Lead Sustaining work to continuously improve product quality, reduce costs, increase production throughput, and evaluate potential alternative suppliers or contract manufactures.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other functional Leads, System Owners and Global Operation Team to ensure effective and timely inputs.
  • Lead a department or functional level change projects as needed, to enhance organizational efficiency and develop new capabilities.
About you
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or Science discipline or equivalent 8+ years of experience in design (plastic, rubber or metal) and product development with good track record, working on complex and challenging technical problems with DFM, DFA, DFC considerations.
  • Ability to analyze processes and information, identify problems and trends, and develop efficient process and strategies.
  • Able to lead a project team or work as an excellent individual contributor, delivering product to production meeting time, cost and specification.
  • Self-driven and independent with the ability to strategize, plan & prioritize tasks according to business need.
  • Practical knowledge of 3D CAD and 2D drawings including GD&T and tolerance stack.
  • Strong practical and methodical approach to design using an iterative development cycle of prototyping, testing, and analysing of data/result.
  • Creative and considered approach to problem solving, following clear design processes.
  • Skills to communicate your ideas to others within your team and across a business.
  • Passion in engineering with desire to constantly improve.
  • Demonstrate how you had made a difference.
  • Knowledgeable and understanding of a broad range of engineering and technological disciplines such as flow, thermals, acoustic and electronics will be an advantage.
  • Good understanding of a broad range of manufacturing techniques and standard industrial measurement methods.
