Job summary

Axle Health is seeking a backend Engineering Manager to lead our backend team of six engineers. You’ll report to our CTO and own the technical direction, delivery, and production health of our backend systems and cloud infrastructure.

This role is roughly 60% hands-on and 40% management. You’ll write, review, and ship code alongside your team while coaching engineers, running delivery across concurrent work streams, and making key hires in your first months.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with 2+ years leading a team while remaining hands-on.
• Deep backend expertise in Python/Django and/or Node.js + TypeScript with relational DB design.
• Production ownership incl. on-call, incident response, observability, postmortems.
• A history of technical leadership and architecture decisions.
• Working knowledge of AWS, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain engineers.
• Experience at an early or growth-stage startup.

Responsibilities

• Hands-On engineering: design, write, review backend code, set quality standards.
• Team leadership: manage, coach, and set expectations for backend engineers.
• Hiring: lead backend and DevOps hiring.
• Backend architecture: own high-volume system design, data modeling, API/SDK.
• Infra and DevOps: own AWS infra, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation.
• Reliability: production health, monitoring, on-call, incident postmortems.
• Security/compliance: HIPAA/SOC 2 alignment from design to deployment.
• Project management: scope, sequence, track multi-stream delivery.
• Cross-functional: collaborate with product, frontend, interoperability teams.
• Engineering standards: enforce testing, code review, and speedy but reliable shipping.
