Job Description
The mission of the Grid Code Engineer is to identify and reduce risks associated with the interconnection of renewable power plants (curtailments, planning and grid code compliance) at the earliest possible stage of project development, especially before the investment decision. The engineer will actively participate in the connection process to ensure energization and COD are secured on time.
Tasks during investment decision process
- Development of technical specifications that define the scope of studies necessary to calculate the annual curtailments due to the lack of evacuation capacity in the network (congestion analysis). Participation in the evaluation, hiring and management of power system consultants.
- Carrying out and/or reviewing congestion analysis of the projects in the Acciona Energía portfolio in Southeast Asia, including scenarios development and steady‑state studies to evaluate the power evacuation capacity of the bus to which the renewable plant under study will connect.
- Analysis of applicable Grid Codes to identify possible risks or new developments necessary in the technology used.
- Analysis of the applicable connection process to ensure planned energization and COD dates are achieved, reviewing information provided by TSO during the connection process.
- Participation in the design of inverters, wind turbines and connection equipment (including reactive power compensation) to ensure grid code compliance and to support the calculation of the capex of the project.
- Coordination with Business Development, Power Marketing, Engineering, Planning and wind/solar Resource departments.
Tasks during project construction
- Development and negotiation with suppliers of WTGs/inverters, PPC and SCADA specifications to comply with Grid Code and internal requirements.
- Review WTGs/inverters and PPC simulation models (PSSE, PSCAD or others) provided by OEMs before submission to consultants or TSOs; perform full wind or solar model and internal due diligence through simulations to demonstrate grid code compliance.
- Manage and review consultant studies needed to obtain energization approval; support these studies actively by conducting in‑house studies and collaborating with OEM modelling team.
- Manage and review Grid Code tests to obtain COD, reviewing and amending reports and supporting with analysis and simulations while maintaining close relationships with WTGs/inverter providers.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Experience doing and reviewing feasibility studies.
- Experience with PSSE, Power Factory or PSCAD.
- Experience with typical studies performed in Southeast Asia for energization and COD.
- Experience dealing with local consultants.
