Job summary

Coins, the pioneer crypto brand in the Philippines, is seeking a Backend Engineer to design and operate Java-based microservices for our payments platform. You’ll work with regional teams, improve reconciliation, and integrate with banks and partners.

You’ll use AI-assisted tools daily, explore AI-powered features, and contribute to reliable, scalable systems while collaborating with Mandarin-speaking stakeholders across regions.

Qualifications

• 1–5 years of backend development experience.
• Hands-on experience with Java (Spring Boot preferred).
• Familiarity with microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
• Strong interest in AI and using AI tooling in development.
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (spoken and written) and business-level English.

Coins is fully regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and is the first ever crypto-based company in Asia to hold both Virtual Currency and Electronic Money Issuer licenses from a central bank.

We're looking for a Backend Engineer who wants to grow their career building payment systems used by millions. You'll work with senior engineers and architects in a regional team, and you'll use AI tools every day to build, test, and ship faster.

• Build and ship backend services: Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based microservices that run our payment platform. Contribute to features across the payment lifecycle, including acquiring, clearing, settlement, and ledger accounting.
• Protect user funds: Help build and improve reconciliation jobs, exception-handling flows, and monitoring that keep every transaction accurate and every peso accounted for.
• Integrate with partners: Work on integrations with banks, local payment methods, card networks, and international payment partners. Along the way you'll learn how multi-currency and FX flows work.
• Use AI in your daily work: Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., code assistants, AI-driven testing, and debugging) to work more productively. Help explore and prototype AI-powered features and internal tools.
• Improve reliability and performance: Troubleshoot production issues, write clean and well-tested code, and help make our systems more available, scalable, and efficient.
• Collaborate across teams and regions: Work closely with product, risk, finance, and compliance, as well as Mandarin-speaking engineering and business teams, to deliver secure and compliant solutions.

• 1–5 years of professional backend development experience. Strong fresh graduates with solid internship or project experience are welcome to apply.
• Hands‑on experience with Java (Spring Boot preferred). Experience in other backend languages is a plus if you're willing to work mainly in Java.
• Familiarity with microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
• A strong interest in AI, such as regularly using AI coding tools, experimenting with LLMs or AI APIs, or building AI-powered side projects.
• Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (spoken and written) is required. You'll work regularly with Mandarin-speaking teams and stakeholders. Business-level English is also required.
• A good grasp of computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and basic distributed systems concepts.
• Strong problem-solving skills, ownership, and eagerness to learn.

• Exposure to fintech, payments, banking, e‑wallets, or crypto.
• Experience with message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), caching (e.g., Redis), or containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Understanding of transaction consistency, idempotency, or reconciliation concepts.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Alibaba Cloud).
