Job summary

Arcadis is seeking an Associate Technical Director to lead hydraulic modelling for major UK Water Companies, guiding CSO improvements, DWMPs, and flood mitigation. You will deliver end-to-end design work, oversee a team of specialists, and collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams to shape sustainable wastewater strategies.

This role offers strategic leadership within a global consultancy, with opportunities to influence project outcomes while upholding safety, quality and innovation

Qualifications

• 15+ years in water resources/Environment/Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Expert in InfoWorks ICM / Micro Drainage or similar packages.
• Experience with CSO improvements for bathing water and shellfish water discharges.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary delivery with large programme budgets (hundreds of millions).
• Solid understanding of the UK Water Industry (wastewater).
• Experience of proposals, presentations, bidding/tendering, and commercial awareness.
• Experienced team leader / line manager.
• Working knowledge of project & programme management and contract/commercial management.

Role Description

Join our growing Wastewater Network Modelling team as an Associate Technical Director and play a key role in delivering high-profile projects that support the UK water industry's environmental improvement goals. Leading hydraulic modelling projects for major UK Water Companies and other clients, you will drive the development of innovative solutions addressing CSO improvements, DWMPs, flooding, pollution reduction, catchment growth, and SuDS retrofit schemes. This is an exciting opportunity to provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from scoping and concept development through design and delivery, while working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams. As part of a specialist team of over 90 water professionals, you will help shape sustainable wastewater strategies that contribute to cleaner rivers, beaches, and marine environments, while building your career towards senior leadership within a global consultancy.

Role Accountabilities

• Proactively managing a portfolio of projects and working in collaboration with other design disciplines and stakeholders.
• Working with the client and taking ownership for the delivery of Arcadis' portfolio of works, with potential secondment arrangements with clients.
• Ensuring adequate resource for the delivery of the programme and identifying needs to enable strategic recruitment as necessary.
• Building a profile with our clients, and maintaining Arcadis' reputation for high quality, innovative design.
• Communicating with team members to ensure that they understand, and become engaged with, company and client processes, plans and initiatives.
• Creating and managing quality processes (PCRA), ensuring quality deliverables and assurance in line with company systems.
• Planning, directing and controlling tasks, people and resources.
• Leading a team and developing staff to meet changing technical and managerial needs.
• Undertaking the design and development of engineering solutions and evaluating their effectiveness.
• Providing technical leadership, direction, and pastoral care to team members, taking a proactive role in developing them to their full potential, leading by example to achieve sector/divisional goals and championing a quality, innovative and entrepreneurial culture.
• Contributing to the resolution of project issues and providing guidance and support to other team members.
• Being familiar with, and compliant with, relevant H&S regulations and promoting a culture of H&S awareness within the team.
• Familiarity with SuDS/NbS is preferable.

Qualifications & Experience

• 15+ years of experience; Master’s in water resources management/Environment/Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Expert in the use of software packages such as InfoWorks ICM / Micro Drainage or similar packages.
• Experience of CSO improvement for bathing water and shellfish water discharges.
• Ability to provide subject matter leadership within a multidisciplinary delivery collaboration with unprecedented programme budget values in the hundreds of millions.
• Solid understanding of the UK Water Industry (wastewater).
• Experience of preparing client proposals, leading on presentations to prospective clients, bidding/tendering for internal and external opportunities, and strong commercial awareness.
• Experienced team leader / line manager.
• A working knowledge of project & programme management.
• A working knowledge of contract and commercial management.
• An excellent communicator who enables, promotes, and drives technical excellence for the ultimate benefit of the client.
• Good people management skills, ensuring that the best talent is used to meet the resource demands for the projected workload.
• Degree in an appropriate analytical subject (Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Engineering Hydrology).
• Preferably Chartered status with CIWEM or ICE.
