Job description

About IDB Lab

IDB Lab is the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, operating as a specialized unit dedicated to identifying, investing in, and supporting high-impact startups and innovative companies across Latin America and the Caribbean. The organization focuses on ventures that leverage technology and innovation to address development challenges while generating significant socioeconomic and environmental impact. The IDB Group itself is a multilateral development bank with 48 member countries, established to improve lives and promote economic development in the Latin American and Caribbean region. The organization operates through several institutional arms, including the IDB (the main lending institution), IDB Invest (which focuses on the private sector), and IDB Lab (which concentrates on innovation and venture capital investments). The IDB Group is known for its collaborative approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders from public and private sectors to mobilize resources and bridge funding gaps in the region. IDB Lab’s Venture Capital Investments (VCI) unit specifically plays a systemic role in filling key funding gaps and fostering ecosystem development across multiple sectors including Fintech, Edtech, Healthtech, and Agtech/Biotech. The VCI unit manages a portfolio of reimbursable operations in both equity and debt instruments, providing structured financing solutions to early-stage and growth-stage companies that demonstrate strong potential for impact and innovation.

About this Role

The Venture Capital Investment Consultant position is part of the Loans team within IDB Lab’s Venture Capital Investments unit. This role supports investment officers in debt operations and is central to the VCI unit’s mission of originating and managing a portfolio of reimbursable operations focused on equity and debt financing. The consultant will work collaboratively with IDB Lab team members to identify and screen deal flow that could develop into viable debt opportunities. This involves building and maintaining relationships with private sector stakeholders and coordinating with Investment Officers across multiple countries throughout the region. The role combines business development activities with rigorous analytical work to assess and structure debt opportunities in high-impact startups and innovative companies. The position requires active participation in multiple stages of the investment process, including sourcing, screening, structuring, and due diligence activities. The consultant will conduct comprehensive financial analysis, prepare financial models, support credit underwriting analysis, perform market analysis, and coordinate with internal stakeholders. Additionally, the consultant will draft investment concept notes and memorandums that move investments through the approval process. Administrative and portfolio management responsibilities form a significant part of this role. The consultant will maintain detailed records of all debt opportunities analyzed by the VCI team, update internal systems to reflect the sourcing and screening pipeline, and prepare strategic documents and presentations related to IDB Lab’s loans portfolio, leads, and pipeline. The consultant will also support investment review discussions and provide ongoing supervision support for debt positions within the financial portfolio.
