Role Overview
The Lead Structural Designer is responsible for planning, distributing, monitoring, and reviewing design and construction drawing activities for structural and outfitting works such as foundations, platforms, helidecks, and living quarters. This role involves supervising design teams, ensuring high-quality deliverables, and coordinating across multiple projects and office locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a checker for design-related deliverables, ensuring clarity, quality, and completeness in both 2D and 3D formats.
- Lead the development of structural detail drawings and material take-offs based on basic design inputs.
- Conduct periodic model reviews and participate in formal 3D model reviews.
- Review designs for safety, accessibility, material handling, maintenance, and operability.
- Collaborate with CAD coordinators for project closeout and documentation.
- Ensure interdisciplinary and management-level review and approval of all design deliverables.
- Establish and maintain discipline-specific design guidelines and standards.
- Plan and schedule team activities, monitor performance, and ensure adherence to budgets and production targets.
- Coordinate with clients during conceptual design phases and provide accurate estimates of drawing quantities.
- Forecast staffing needs and budget requirements, including time and material estimates.
- Coordinate with IT for software setup and development related to design activities.
- Review and comment on vendor drawings and perform site surveys as needed.
- Analyze design options to optimize cost and scheduling.
- Supervise project closeout activities, including preparation of as-built documentation.
- Ensure compliance with client specifications, company standards, HSES policies, and information security protocols.
- Identify training and development needs for design team personnel.
Qualifications
- Education: Diploma in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum 10–15 years in structural design, preferably in offshore/onshore oil & gas projects.
- Software Proficiency: AutoCAD for 2D drafting, PDMS, TEKLA, AVEVA Marine, or equivalent for 3D modeling.
- Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
