Job summary

KiwiRail Freight is seeking an experienced Test Engineer to ensure quality and reliability of technology solutions across our ICT delivery environment.

You will work on end-to-end testing across APIs, integrations, and system components, with opportunities to advance automation, AI-assisted testing, and modern Quality Engineering practices within a collaborative team.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in a Test Engineer role, with a strong understanding of SDLC and QA practices.
• Hands-on experience across API, integration, system, regression, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing.
• Experience developing test strategies, plans and cases, managing defects, and reporting on testing outcomes.
• Strong SQL and data analysis skills, including data migration and business process validation.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement across technical and business teams.

Responsibilities

• Manage test execution, defects, quality risks, progress reporting, and release readiness.
• Perform API, integration, system, regression, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing.
• Manage test environments, test data, and testing artefacts.
• Collaborate with internal teams, business stakeholders, and third-party vendors to resolve issues and deliver quality outcomes.
• Identify opportunities to improve testing through automation, AI-assisted tools, reusable assets, and modern Quality Engineering practices.
• Help continuously improve testing standards, tools, methodologies, and ways of working across ICT.

Job description

As a Test Engineer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the quality and reliability of technology solutions across KiwiRail. Working within our ICT delivery environment, you’ll be responsible for end-to-end testing, from developing test strategies and plans through to execution, defect management, reporting, and release readiness.

You’ll work across a range of projects and BAU initiatives, collaborating with business stakeholders, developers, business analysts, vendors, and delivery teams. Your testing will span API, integration, system, regression, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing across complex technology environments.

You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to the evolution of our testing practices, including automation, reusable test assets, AI-assisted testing, and modern Quality Engineering approaches.

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing and executing end-to-end test strategies, plans, test cases, and testing activities
• Managing test execution, defects, quality risks, progress reporting, and release readiness
• Performing API, integration, system, regression, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing.
• Managing test environments, test data, and testing artefacts
• Collaborating closely with internal teams, business stakeholders, and third-party vendors to resolve issues and deliver quality outcomes
• Identifying opportunities to improve testing through automation, AI-assisted tools, reusable assets, and modern Quality Engineering practices
• Helping continuously improve testing standards, tools, methodologies, and ways of working across ICT

You’ll be an experienced Test Engineer with strong technical capability, analytical thinking, and a collaborative approach. Ideally, you’ll bring:

• 3+ years’ experience in a Test Engineer role, with a strong understanding of SDLC and quality assurance practices
• Hands-on experience across API, integration, system, regression, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing
• Experience developing test strategies, plans and cases, managing defects, and reporting on testing outcomes
• Strong SQL and data analysis skills, including data migration and business process validation
• Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and communicate quality risks
• Experience with test management, defect management, and work-tracking tools.
• Exposure to AI-assisted testing, automation, or tools such as Playwright, Selenium or Cypress is advantageous
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working across technical and business teams
• A relevant tertiary qualification and ISTQB Foundation certification
• A current, full New Zealand Driver Licence

You will also hold a full New Zealand Driver Licence and be able to meet KiwiRail's pre-employment medical, drug, and alcohol screening requirements
