Job summary

About the Role

The Telecommunications Engineer is responsible for deploying, configuring, maintaining and supporting telecommunications and digital communication services across Health New Zealand. The role focuses on maintaining reliable, secure and stable services, troubleshooting technical issues, supporting incidents and implementing technical solutions in partnership with Senior Engineers, Digital Operations teams and service providers.

The role also contributes to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve service performance, reliability and efficiency. You will work with project teams, clinical and operational stakeholders and technology vendors to deliver solutions that meet technical and business requirements. The position requires a proactive, customer-focused approach, strong technical problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Telecommunications team forms part of Digital Operations and provides essential communication and technology services that support clinical and operational teams across Health New Zealand. The team works nationally with technical teams, users, vendors and stakeholders to ensure telecommunications services remain available, secure and fit for purpose.

You will work in a collaborative environment that values innovation, continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and strong customer service. The role involves working with a wide range of telecommunications technologies, including voice, data, video, telephony, VoIP, unified communications and contact centre solutions. There may also be opportunities to contribute to national initiatives, projects, service improvements and incident resolution.

About you

You are a technically capable telecommunications or ICT professional with experience in deploying, configuring, maintaining and supporting technology services. You have strong troubleshooting and analytical skills and can investigate technical issues, identify solutions and restore services effectively while managing competing priorities.

You communicate confidently with technical and non-technical stakeholders and are comfortable working independently or as part of a wider team. You take ownership of your work, demonstrate initiative and remain focused on delivering reliable and customer-focused services. Experience with telephony, VoIP, unified communications, network infrastructure, contact centre technologies and telecommunications security will be highly valuable. A relevant degree, qualification or industry certification such as CCNA, CCNP or Cisco certification would also be desirable.

To succeed in this role, you will bring
  • 5+ years of experience in telecommunications engineering or a related ICT environment.
  • Experience deploying, configuring and maintaining telecommunications services.
  • Experience with telephony, VoIP and unified communications technologies.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of network infrastructure, telecommunications security and compliance.
  • Experience with contact centre and call centre technologies is desirable.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Relevant degree or qualification in IT, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP or Cisco are highly desirable.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities.
