Job summary

University of Otago in Dunedin is seeking a Technical Manager to maintain department facilities and equipment to support research and teaching in Microbiology and Immunology. This permanent full-time role (37.5 hours/week) operates across PC2/PC3 labs and includes on-call duties and safety responsibilities.

The successful candidate will evaluate equipment needs, oversee repairs, ensure proper functioning of laboratory hardware, and contribute to safety leadership as Deputy Health and Safety

Qualifications

• Tertiary science qualification is required.
• Experience with physical containment levels 1–3 is an asset.
• Strong communication and organisational skills are essential.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate departmental large equipment needs and new or replacement items.
• Evaluate, remedy or request equipment and building repairs; oversee building security.
• Oversee technical maintenance of PC2 and PC3 facilities; ongoing training provided.
• Ensure all laboratory equipment and related computer hardware are in working order.
• Act as Deputy Health and Safety Officer and Deputy Fire Warden.
• Maintain equipment in safe working condition.
• Be on 24hr call for the PC3 facility, cold storage and building/equipment.
• Communicate repair and maintenance activities to staff and students to minimise disruption.
