Job summary

Bioeconomy Science Institute is seeking a Summer Student Intern to help develop an AI-powered knowledge search tool for BPA's historic information. You will understand user needs, assess AI technologies, and define a minimum viable product to support decision-making and knowledge sharing across projects.

You will work with supervisors and scientists to craft MVP specifications, explore self-hosted open-source approaches, and gain hands-on experience in AI, data management, and research

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, an undergraduate degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, data science, business analytics, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline.
• An interest in artificial intelligence, data management, information systems, or digital innovation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Motivation to learn new laboratory, nursery, and research techniques.

Responsibilities

• Collate and organise relevant BPA information and knowledge resources.
• Define priority user needs and identify practical use cases for an AI knowledge search tool.
• Assess available AI tools, platforms, and technical approaches.
• Work with supervisors and colleagues to develop specifications for a minimum viable product (MVP).
• Identify how such a product could be brought into existing, self-hosted, open-source tools, and summarise the schema and proposed metadata structure.
• Assist with developing and testing an initial prototype if project timeframes allow.
