We're building a new AI-enabled software development squad for a large, well-established Auckland organisation.
This is an opportunity to help create a modern engineering practice from the ground up, using AI tooling to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards across architecture, security, testing and user experience.
The squad will develop new applications and modernise legacy processes, with a focus on reducing manual work and making information easier for people to access. One potential initiative involves creating a plain-English interface that can surface information from multiple systems, helping users find answers faster.
We're looking for Software Engineers at three levels:
Junior Software Engineer You may have up to two years' commercial experience or strong project work that demonstrates your capability. You'll have solid programming fundamentals, curiosity and a genuine interest in learning how to build production software using modern development and AI tools.
You’ll work on clearly defined tasks, receive regular technical coaching and develop your skills across coding, testing, debugging and secure software delivery.
Intermediate Software Engineer You'll likely bring around two to five years' commercial development experience and be comfortable delivering features from design through to production. You'll work independently within the squad's agreed architecture, use AI coding tools effectively, review generated code critically and support junior engineers through pairing, feedback and code review.
Senior Software Engineer / Squad Tech Lead This is a hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced engineer with strong software architecture and full-stack delivery capability. You'll set the technical direction for the squad, own the engineering quality gate and personally design, build and ship production software. You'll also establish guardrails for AI-assisted development, review human and AI-generated code, and mentor intermediate and junior engineers. The Tech Lead will provide technical leadership without carrying HR or line-management responsibilities. People leadership will sit with the squad's Product Owner.
The technology environment The squad will work across a modern, cloud-first stack that includes:

Experience with Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot or similar AI development tools would be valuable. What matters most is your ability to use these tools thoughtfully, understand and verify the output, and recognise when a generated solution is not right.
What we're looking for Depending on the level, you'll bring a combination of:
For the Senior / Tech Lead opportunity, we're also looking for proven architecture capability, experience setting engineering standards and a genuine track record of developing other engineers.
Why consider this opportunity?
Both permanent and contract applications will be considered, with a preference toward permanent appointments. Remuneration will reflect the level of the role.
These roles are based in Auckland. Successful applicants will also need to meet the organisation's relevant background and regulatory requirements.
If you're interested in building production software in an environment where AI is treated as a genuine engineering capability, rather than simply another coding tool, we'd like to hear from you.
