Job summary

New Zealand Government, through Stats NZ, is seeking an experienced Senior Test Engineer to join our Christchurch-based project team. You will contribute to testing strategies, plan and execute both functional and non-functional tests, and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver robust, reliable data solutions.

With at least 5 years in software testing, you will apply SQL and Python expertise, build automated frameworks, and work within CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and Git.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in software testing including Test Automation Engineer or similar
• Strong practical knowledge of SQL and Python
• Solid understanding of testing methodologies, tools and frameworks such as Python, Scala, Selenium
• Hands-on experience building automated testing frameworks using Pytest or similar
• Experience with CI/CD practices and tools like Azure DevOps and Git
• Knowledge of modern cloud-based data platforms, including Databricks and/or Snowflake
• Experience designing, automating, and maintaining integration and regression test suites
• Knowledge of Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) and Gherkin

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement test strategies, plans, and approaches for successful project delivery
• Perform manual and automated testing to meet business requirements and outcomes
• Collaborate with project teams to foster a culture of quality and accountability
• Understand Stats NZ processes, surveys, and data domains
• Identify, track, and manage defects using appropriate tools
• Conduct test reviews to ensure coverage and adherence to quality standards
