Job summary

Stantec in New Zealand is seeking a Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead MV/HV/EHV substation design projects. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to deliver reliable substations, perform advanced electrical studies, and support procurement, construction, and commissioning.

The role requires a degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems), NZ experience, and chartership or intent to pursue it. Travel and site work are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor level Electrical Engineering with power systems focus.
  • Experience with HV substations and utilities in NZ.
  • Field commissioning and testing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform load flow, short circuit, discrimination, grounding analyses.
  • Design substations including switchyard layouts, grounding plans, cable routing.
  • Prepare technical specs for major equipment procurement and construction.
  • Provide technical support for procurement, construction and commissioning.
  • Mentor junior engineers and coordinate with disciplines.
  • Follow QA/QC procedures and conduct site visits.

About the role:

Stantec's Power team in New Zealand is currently undergoing significant growth on the back of new clients and projects offering exciting opportunities for Electrical Engineers to work on a variety of MV/HV/EHV AC and DC substation projects locally and globally. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to develop efficient and reliable substations for our clients. You will coordinate the planning and design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. We provide career opportunities that are as unique as you.

Key responsibilities include
  • Perform engineering studies such as load flow, short circuit, discrimination, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, TRV, cable ampacity, rigid and flexible bus, lighting, etc.
  • Conduct detailed design of substations, including switchyard layouts, sections, grounding plan/details, cable routing, AC/DC distribution, major equipment specifications, single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, marking, design calculations, etc.
  • Prepare technical specifications for major equipment procurement, construction and commissioning.
  • Provide technical support for procurement, construction and commissioning.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, project plans and estimates.
  • Mentor junior engineers.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines during project execution to solve challenging technical issues.
  • Follow internal QA/QC procedures to deliver high quality engineering service to the clients.
  • Conduct site visits to verify existing installation, define project scope, prepare for detailed design and provide construction site supports as required.
What you’ll bring to the role
  • Relevant degree in Electrical Engineering (specialisation in Power Systems)
  • Experience on power systems tools such DigSILENT, CYMCAP, PSSE, PSCAD, ETAP, CDEGS, WinIGS
  • Experience on numerical computation tools such as MathCAD, Matlab, Python
  • Field experience in commissioning and testing
  • Proven knowledge in Civil/Structural and P&C
  • Equipment engineering experience
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, AutoCAD.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (written, verbal) are a must in interaction with multi-disciplinary teams, suppliers, sub-consultants and client relationships
  • Valid NZ driver’s license.
  • 5 years of proven direct detailed design and engineering experience related to high voltage substations for Utilities in New Zealand
  • Chartership (CPEng) or intention to attain chartership. Stantec provides support to attain chartership
