Job summary

Tonkin + Taylor is seeking a Principal Mechanical or Electrical Engineer to establish and grow an in-house M&E capability in New Zealand. You will lead senior technical work on multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, mentor a growing team, and influence bids and client pursuits across water, energy, and renewables.

The role offers strategic impact, leadership development, and the chance to shape a scalable M&E offering within a 100% employee-owned consultancy.

Qualifications

15+ years’ experience in Mechanical or Electrical engineering roles.
Chartered status is highly advantageous.
Strong capability in M&E design and delivery on infrastructure projects.
Experience delivering water, wastewater, energy, dams, or waste infrastructure.
Proven leadership, client focus and ability to grow teams and business.

Responsibilities

Provide senior technical leadership for Mechanical and/or Electrical engineering on multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
Lead or review M&E inputs across water, wastewater, stormwater, dams, energy/renewables; support pumps, controls, distribution, SCADA.
Collaborate with civil, water, environmental, and process teams to deliver integrated solutions.
Mentor engineers, guide recruitment, and shape the culture of a new M&E team.
Contribute to bids, client relationships, and market expansion for the service line.
