Job summary
MAS is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel - Insurance to join our Risk and Legal team in New Zealand. This permanent role can be based in Auckland or Wellington and focuses on general and life insurance, policy interpretation, coverage issues, and regulatory obligations.
You will provide practical legal guidance across products, claims, governance, and commercial arrangements, partnering with Claims, Product, Underwriting, Compliance, and senior leadership to deliver sound outcomes for
Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer with NZ practising certificate or eligibility.
- Experience in-house within insurance or financial services preferred.
- Strong ability to interpret policy wording and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice on insurance policy interpretation and coverage issues.
- Advise on complex insurance claims, disputes, complaints, and remediation matters.
- Support litigation and manage external lawyers as needed.
- Draft and review commercial contracts and provider arrangements.
- Contribute to product governance, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders to balance legal risk with commercial needs.
- Monitor regulatory developments affecting insurers and advise accordingly.
