At Inland Revenue, our work directly supports better outcomes for our customers, our people, and for New Zealand. As an Architect L3, you will provide enterprise-level architectural leadership across technology, security, data, and business change initiatives.

Operating at the intersection of architecture strategy, security, policy, and solution delivery, you will help shape technology outcomes that support Inland Revenue's strategic direction while ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, sustainable, and aligned with enterprise objectives.

You will play a key role in guiding programmes of work, evaluating emerging technologies and trends, identifying opportunities for improvement, and influencing decisions that deliver long-term value across the organisation. Working closely with business and technology stakeholders, you will design and steward architectures that enable successful delivery while balancing strategic priorities, operational realities, risk, and customer outcomes.

Te Tari Taake Inland Revenue (IR) plays a critical role in improving the economic and social wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand. We collect and distribute money on behalf of the Crown, while helping ensure New Zealand's revenue systems remain effective, trusted, and sustainable.

We are committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our work with Māori customers, employees, whānau, hapū and iwi. We continue to build a culture that is customer-centric, intelligence-led, agile, innovative, and inclusive.

We deliver value by shaping technology direction, improving user experiences, enabling secure and effective outcomes, and supporting IR's customer-centric culture.

About the role - Mō te Tūnga

As an Architect L3, you will provide architectural expertise and leadership across a range of technology domains and initiatives.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Provide enterprise and solution architecture leadership across technology, security, data, integration, and business initiatives, ensuring alignment with Inland Revenue's strategic objectives
  • Design and develop technology architectures, reference architectures, standards, patterns, blueprints, and roadmaps that enable sustainable, secure, and scalable business outcomes
  • Translate business strategies, policies, security requirements, and enterprise objectives into practical architectural guidance, solution designs, and implementation pathways
  • Lead and contribute to the design and delivery of solutions across diverse technology domains, including cloud services, SaaS platforms, ERP systems, integrations, data ecosystems, and bespoke applications
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies, industry trends, and architectural approaches to identify opportunities for innovation, optimisation, and continuous improvement
  • Define, shape, and embed security, resilience, performance, compliance, and other non-functional requirements within architecture and solution designs
  • Provide architectural governance and oversight through Architecture Review Boards and decision-making forums, supporting effective risk management and enterprise-wide technology decisions
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, delivery teams, Service Delivery and Integration Managers (SIDMs), and external partners to develop technology roadmaps, manage interdependencies and trade-offs, and support cross-agency collaboration where appropriate

You are a senior architect who can operate confidently across organisational boundaries, balancing strategic thinking with practical delivery experience. You are comfortable leading through ambiguity and influencing outcomes with a broad range of stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
  • Deep experience in technology architecture, including developing reference architectures, blueprints, patterns, roadmaps, and implementation pathways that align with strategic objectives and secure-by-design principles
  • Strong ability to translate IR strategy, policy, standards, and enterprise requirements into practical, actionable architectural guidance for delivery and operational teams
  • Proven capability to influence enterprise-wide and cross-agency decision-making, providing trusted architectural leadership across complex stakeholder environments
  • Excellent analytical and synthesis skills, able to transform complex qualitative and quantitative information into clear architectural options, recommendations, and outcomes for senior leaders
  • Demonstrated strategic judgement and enterprise-level trade-off thinking, balancing competing priorities, risks, constraints, and long-term organisational outcomes
  • Comfortable leading through ambiguity, navigating complexity, and providing clear direction while supporting sound decision-making through architecture governance and review processes
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance, and non-functional requirements, with the ability to embed security, resilience, performance, and quality attributes into architectural designs and solutions
  • Proven success in assessing current-state environments, identifying improvement opportunities, and delivering pragmatic architectural interventions that strengthen organisational capability, risk management, and security posture

This is a dynamic and busy role where your ability to think strategically, stay organised, influence effectively, and collaborate with others will be key. You'll have the opportunity to challenge yourself while helping shape the future technology landscape of a world-class service organization.

At Inland Revenue, we truly embrace diversity and inclusion and promote a flexible and supportive work environment that meets the needs of our people and business.
