Job summary

Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa is seeking a Senior Advisor to contribute to Strategic Engagement, Māori Partnerships and Outcomes. You will lead advisory work across Census and Māori Data Governance, and provide quality guidance for senior leaders and committees. The role embeds Te Tiriti-informed approaches and requires strong engagement with iwi Māori.

The team supports meaningful Māori engagement, governance, and data needs across programmes, shaping outcomes for communities and the nation.

Qualifications

• Expertise in iwi Māori data needs and aspirations.
• Experience leading Māori Data Governance initiatives.
• Ability to engage iwi Māori early in projects.
• Understanding of government processes and decision-making.
• Commitment to te Tiriti o Waitangi and mātauranga Māori.
• Willingness to learn and develop te reo Māori.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert advice and support to advance iwi Māori data needs and aspirations.
• Lead the implementation of Māori Data Governance using the Stats NZ Māori Data Governance Overlay approach.
• Build organisational capability in Kaupapa Māori approaches and frameworks to improve outcomes for iwi Māori.
• Enable early and meaningful engagement with iwi Māori across work programme development and delivery.
• Embed iwi Māori data and information interests throughout programme design, delivery, and evaluation.
• Prepare briefings and provide strategic advice to senior leaders and coordinate information and reporting for key committees and boards.
• Contribute to organisational strategy and delivery across Stats NZ.
• Apply knowledge of government processes, systems, and decision-making frameworks.
