Job summary

SMEC in New Zealand is seeking a motivated Designer – Roads & Highways to support delivery of transport infrastructure projects across New Zealand.

You will join our Roads & Highways team, focusing on design quality, technical rigour and coordinated outcomes while expanding your capability in multidiscipline settings.

With 8+ years in roads design and strong 12d/AutoCAD skills, you will contribute to innovative solutions and collaborate across teams on nationally significant projects.

Qualifications

• 8+ years' experience in roads and highways design within a consulting or infrastructure environment.
• Strong proficiency in 12d as the primary design software; familiarity with Civil 3D or OpenRoads is beneficial.
• Experience producing design drawings in AutoCAD and supporting technical documentation.
• Working knowledge of New Zealand transport and road design standards.
• Experience across concept, reference, and detailed design project phases.
• Excellent communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
• Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with commitment to quality.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality roads and highways design outputs.
• Prepare drawings, models, and documentation using 12d and AutoCAD.
• Contribute to design reports and peer reviews.
• Ensure compliance with NZ standards and client specs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely delivery.
• Support engineers and senior designers.
• Communicate with internal teams to align deliverables.
• Work to project deadlines and budgets.
• Contribute to continuous improvement across design processes.
