Job summary

WSP in New Zealand is seeking a River Engineer/Analyst to join the Christchurch Water team. You will work on river engineering, flood risk and hydraulic modelling to support safer, sustainable water management across Canterbury.

You will participate in investigations, feasibility studies and reporting, with opportunities to lead planning and mentor colleagues as your experience grows. A collaborative, client-focused approach is essential.

Qualifications

• At least five years of professional experience in river engineering, river science, hydraulic modelling, flood risk management or related field.
• Experience interpreting river processes and applying this knowledge to investigations, assessments and design projects.
• Chartered membership of CPEng, CIWEM or similar body, or working towards it.
• Confidence producing and reviewing models, plans, calculations, reports and other technical documents, with sound judgement and problem solving.
• Collaborative, client-focused communication style, with the ability to facilitate meetings, present technical information clearly and work with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
• A current, clean driver’s license and willingness to travel when required.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to investigations, feasibility studies, flood and erosion assessments, hydraulic modelling, and river management planning.
• Prepare technical reports and support project delivery for river engineering projects.
• Lead or support project planning and provide technical reviews for team members.
• Collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams to develop solutions and manage stakeholders.

River Engineer / Analyst - Christchurch

Join our Christchurch Water team and help shape how communities across Aotearoa adapt to changing rivers, flooding and climate risk. Working alongside some of New Zealand's leading river, flood and resilience specialists, you'll contribute to projects that improve community safety, strengthen environmental outcomes and support sustainable water management.

You’ll contribute to investigations, feasibility studies, flood and erosion assessments, hydraulic modelling, river management planning and technical reporting. As your experience grows, you’ll have opportunities to lead project planning, provide technical review and support the development of other team members.

You’ll enjoy working with clients and multidisciplinary teams, building trusted relationships and contributing to successful project delivery. You’ll also have opportunities to support proposals, develop your professional network and collaborate with colleagues across our national Water team.

About You

Interested candidates should ideally have:

• A BE, BSc or equivalent qualification in Physical Geography, Geology (with a geomorphology focus), Natural Resources Engineering or a related discipline.
• At least five years of professional experience in river engineering, river science, hydraulic modelling, flood risk management or a related field.
• Experience interpreting river processes and applying this knowledge to investigations, assessments and design projects.
• Obtained or working towards Chartered membership of CPEng, CIWEM or a similar approved professional body. Confidence producing and reviewing models, plans, calculations, reports and other technical documents, supported by sound judgement, effective problem solving and an understanding of relevant technical standards, legislation and New Zealand standards.
• A collaborative, client-focused communication style, with the ability to facilitate meetings, present technical information clearly and work effectively with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams.
• A current, clean driver’s license and flexibility to travel when required.
