Job summary

Axios is seeking a writer-editor to lead the afternoons and evenings on the newsdesk, reporting to the Executive Editor. You will drive rapid story generation, edit a broad mix of national news, and coordinate with a team of journalists to ensure timely, accurate coverage.

Axios is a media organization dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news in an audience-first format. We're hiring for a writer-editor to lead the afternoons and evenings on our newsdesk.

Reporting to our Executive Editor, the news writer-editor will play a critical role as part of the 24/7 nerve center for the newsroom.

• Real-time news surveillance
• Quick-turn writing of spot news stories
• Editing a wide variety of national news, from breaking stories across the national file to the occasional enterprise.
• Monitoring developments on key stories and flagging them to experts

• Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with a team of journalists.
• Writing and editing experience in a fast-paced news environment.
• Demonstrated experience monitoring and activating on news.
• A belief in Smart Brevity as the core writing style of Axios.
• Experience working across teams to produce quality content.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the digital and social media landscape.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Willing to work afternoons/evenings (2pm-10pm ET Sunday-Thursday)

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $70,000 - $110,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
