Job summary

New Plymouth District Council is seeking an experienced Solicitor for a 12-month fixed-term parental leave cover. The role focuses on providing practical legal advice across diverse matters and partnering with decision makers to deliver positive community outcomes.

Applicants with public sector or local government experience are preferred, though we welcome strong lawyers from varied backgrounds. Flexible working arrangements are considered, including remote options and adjusted hours.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws required.
• Hold, or able to obtain, a current New Zealand practising certificate.
• Minimum five years PQE (private practice or in-house).
• Experience in public law, local government, regulatory law, resource management, property or commercial law would be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Provide robust and practical general legal advice to Council officers and managers.
• Ideally demonstrate understanding of local government law to contribute to quality outcomes.
• Show sound analytical and decision-making skills in the wider Council context.
