Job summary

Downer is seeking a Pest Management Area Technical Coordinator to deliver pest management activities across designated areas. The role involves monitoring control effectiveness, coordinating permits and biodiversity monitoring, and trialling new techniques.

Reporting to the PM Leadership team, you will work both in the field and office, with a focus on organisation and communication to ensure high-intensity pest control and biodiversity protection.

Qualifications

• Degree in environmental science or similar preferred.
• Experience with large-scale mammalian pest management in NZ forests.
• Strong biodiversity conservation knowledge.
• Experience with GIS and map building.
• Familiarity with pest management field operations and traps/toxins.

Responsibilities

• Monitor pest control effectiveness and operations performance.
• Handle procurement of permits, licences, and authorities as required.
• Identify biodiversity hotspots for priority treatment.
• Coordinate biodiversity outcome monitoring and trial new pest management techniques.

We are seeking a Pest Management Area Technical Coordinator to support the successful delivery of pest management activities!

The NZ Transport Agency, along with delivering entity the Mt Messenger Alliance, is constructing a new section of SH3 between Uruti and Ahititi to the north of New Plymouth in Taranaki, located entirely within the rōhe of Ngāti Tama. This new section of SH3 will bypass the existing approximately 7.4km steep, narrow and winding section of highway at Mt Messenger. The name 'Te Ara o Te Ata' was gifted to the NZ Transport Agency by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Tama to seal their partnership agreement.

As a major part of the environmental mitigation associated with the construction of the road, the NZ Transport Agency are required to undertake intensive pest management in perpetuity over 3650 square ha of native forest adjacent to the new road. This work builds on and expands on the pest management that has been undertaken by Ngāti Tama for the past decade to protect the Mauri of this significant coastal forest.

We are seeking a Pest Management Area Technical Coordinator to support the successful delivery of pest management activities throughout the designated area. Reporting to the Pest Management (PM) Leadership team, responsibilities will a variety of work associated with the monitoring of pest control effectiveness, and operations performance, procurement of permits, licences and authorities as required, determination of biodiversity hot spots for priority treatment, organisation and participation in biodiversity outcome monitoring and trialling new and innovative pest management techniques.

The position will serve as key support role to the PMA Operations Manager and will assist the programme in achieving and maintaining effective high-intensity pest control. The role requires field and office-based work as well as working both individually and as part of a wider team.

We are looking for a self-starter who is highly organised with strong communication skills, plenty of initiative and attention to detail. You will also have:

• Knowledge of and experience with large scale mammalian pest management in New Zealand forest.
• Broad knowledge and field experience in practical conservation management and the science of biodiversity conservation.
• GIS skills, map building, land management, project development.
• Skill with introducing and managing Technology into pest management programmes.
• Pest density and biodiversity field monitoring techniques and survey data analysis.
• Good organisation and communication skills.
• Competent in the bush with knowledge of bush craft and health and safety protocols.
• Report writing skills.
• Degree qualified with environmental science degree or similar preferred.
• Knowledge of pest management field operations and experience with the practical use of a wide range of traps and pest toxins.
• CLS licence preferable.
