Job summary

Downer seeks a Pest Management Area Technical Coordinator to support intensive pest management near a new road project in New Zealand. The role involves field and office work, monitoring pest control effectiveness, procuring permits, and identifying biodiversity hotspots for priority treatment.

You will assist the PMA Operations Manager and participate in biodiversity monitoring and testing new pest management techniques in a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of and experience with large scale mammalian pest management in New Zealand forest.
• Broad knowledge and field experience in practical conservation management and biodiversity science.
• GIS skills and map building, land management, project development.
• Experience with integrating technology into pest management programmes.
• Pest density and biodiversity field monitoring and data analysis.
• Good organisation and communication skills.
• Bush craft and health and safety knowledge.
• Report writing skills.
• Degree in environmental science or similar preferred.
• Experience with pest management field operations and traps/toxins.
• CLS licence preferable.

Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

As a major part of the environmental mitigation associated with the construction of the road, the NZ Transport Agency are required to undertake intensive pest management in perpetuity over 3650 square ha of native forest adjacent to the new road. This work builds on and expands on the pest management that has been undertaken by Ngāti Tama for the past decade to protect the Mauri of this significant coastal forest.

Pest Management Area Technical Coordinator

Reporting to the Pest Management (PM) Leadership team, responsibilities will a variety of work associated with the monitoring of pest control effectiveness, and operations performance, procurement of permits, licences and authorities as required, determination of biodiversity hot spots for priority treatment, organisation and participation in biodiversity outcome monitoring and trialling new and innovative pest management techniques.

The position will serve as key support role to the PMA Operations Manager and will assist the programme in achieving and maintaining effective high‑intensity pest control. The role requires field and office‑based work as well as working both individually and as part of a wider team.

• Competent in the bush with knowledge of bush craft and health and safety protocols.
• Report writing skills.
• Degree qualified with environmental science degree or similar preferred.
• Knowledge of pest management field operations and experience with the practical use of a wide range of traps and pest toxins.
• CLS licence preferable.
