• Experience in teaching, mentoring and research or quality improvement is desirable.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are inviting expressions of interest for apermanent, full-time Paediatric Interventional Cardiologist position at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, anticipated to become available in2027–2028following planned retirements.

Our Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Service provides national care for New Zealand and several Pacific Island nations, with catheter interventions spanning neonates through to adults. The successful candidate would join a team of three interventionalists within a supportive multidisciplinary service.

This is an exciting time to join us, with a planned catheter laboratory redevelopment and an expanding programme incorporating virtual reality and 3D printing for procedural planning. Auckland also offers a wonderful lifestyle, with easy access to beaches, islands and outdoor activities.

Role Description

This full-time, on-site role is based at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland. The Paediatric Interventional Cardiologist will provide specialist care to children with congenital and acquired heart conditions, performing diagnostic and interventional procedures in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Day-to-day responsibilities include assessing patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, planning and executing catheter-based interventions, and collaborating closely with paediatric cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, and nursing teams. The role also involves participating in multidisciplinary case conferences, contributing to quality improvement and clinical governance activities, and supporting teaching and training of junior medical staff and other learners. Participation in on-call duties, research, and service development initiatives is expected.

Qualifications

• Advanced clinical expertise in Paediatric Medicine and Paediatric Cardiology, with demonstrated experience managing complex cardiac conditions in infants, children, and adolescents.
• Proficiency in Cath Lab practice, including pre-procedure assessment, intra-procedural decision-making, and post-procedure care in a paediatric setting.
• Specialist skills in Interventional Cardiology techniques, including diagnostic cardiac catheterization and catheter-based interventions for congenital and structural heart disease.
• Recognized medical degree and completion of specialist training in paediatric cardiology, with fellowship-level training in paediatric interventional cardiology or equivalent.
• Eligible for specialist registration (or equivalent) with the relevant medical council, and able to meet credentialing requirements for paediatric interventional practice.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities, with a commitment to family-centred care and collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Experience in clinical teaching, mentoring, and participation in research or quality improvement projects is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated commitment to ethical practice, patient safety, continuous learning, and culturally responsive care for diverse populations.
