Job summary

Health New Zealand’s Maternity Unit seeks an experienced Midwifery Educator to provide practical, clinically-focused coaching across Wellington Hospital and surrounding units. You will mentor staff, supervise RTPs and graduates, and support onboarding and ongoing skill refreshment.

• Be registered with the Midwifery Council in New Zealand.
• Hold a current Midwifery Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
• Have a current Vulnerable Children’s Act clearance screen.
• Have a minimum of 5 years’ midwifery experience.
• Experience as a preceptor or mentor.
• Commit to culturally safe practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.

Responsibilities

• Work in a supernumerary capacity to provide practical clinically focused education and coaching in the clinical environment to consolidate practice and build confidence.
• Role model excellent clinically and culturally safe care.
• Provide supervision, coaching and clinical education to midwives returning to practice (RTP) or new to New Zealand practice.
• Support New Graduate Midwives in their first year of practice to become resilient practitioners.
• Assist in onboarding new staff and Maternity Access Holders and participate in orientation.
• Collaborate with staff to refresh clinical skills or knowledge as needed.
• Provide feedback during Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and encourage professional development.

This positions will work across the floor – both in the Birthing Suite and 4 North Maternity (Wellington) and on occasion Kenepuru or Paraparaumu Maternity Unit.

About the Role

This positions will work across the floor – both in the Birthing Suite and 4 North Maternity and on occasion Kenepuru or Paraparaumu Maternity Unit.

The primary purpose of the role is to:

• Work in a supernumerary capacity to provide practical clinically focused education and coaching in the clinical environment to consolidate practice and build confidence
• Role model excellent clinically and culturally safe care.
• Provide supervision, coaching and clinical education to midwives undergoing “return to practice” RTP or new to New Zealand practice. Working with Midwifery Council requirements to ensure that midwives succeed in attaining a full midwifery annual practicing certificate
• Provide close clinical support for New Graduate Midwives (MFYP) to enable them to succeed in their first year of practice and become resilient practitioners
• Support the on-boarding of new staff and Maternity Access Holders and participate in their orientation
• Work alongside staff who need to refresh their clinical skills or knowledge
• Provide support and feedback to midwives during a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP)
• Encourage and support the professional development of midwives
• Collaborate in creating a caring working environment were all staff and access holders are respected and valued.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Wellington Hospital Maternity Unit is a modern, purpose-built, busy unit catering for the needs of women and their whānau. There are 12 self-contained, fully equipped labour and birthing rooms, and an operative theatre onsite. The antenatal and postnatal ward has 26 resourced beds. The team includes midwives, obstetric medical doctors, anaesthetists, healthcare assistants, administration officers and cleaners. In our fast-paced environment we have to work closely together to get the best results for those we are caring for.

About you

The successful applicant will:

• Be a registered with the Midwifery Council in New Zealand 2
• Hold a current Midwifery APC2
• Have a current Vulnerable Children’s Act children’s worker clearance screen
• Have a minimum of 5 years’ midwifery experience2
• Experience as a preceptor, or mentor
• A willingness to work in a culturally safe manner and an appreciation of your obligations as a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner
