Awanui Labs - Nelson is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist for its Core Lab in Nelson. This permanent, full-time role offers an 80-hour fortnight schedule and a chance to contribute to high-quality diagnostic pathology services.

The successful applicant will have MSCNZ registration and APC, a methodical, detail-oriented approach, and be able to work both independently and within a team. A supportive environment with opportunities for professional growth is provided.

Qualifications

  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand is required.
  • An Annual Practising Certificate (APC) is mandatory.
  • A methodical approach and adherence to quality procedures expected.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Barcoding, receipting, and preparing specimens as they arrive in the lab.
  • Enter patient and test details accurately into the system.
  • Answer telephones and handle enquiries professionally.
  • Work well under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills with high accuracy.
  • Learn new skills and adapt to changing procedures.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain a friendly, customer-focused approach at all times.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:

Our Core Lab Department is currently looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and competent Medical Laboratory Scientist. This is a permanent, full-time position with an 80-hour fortnight.

You will be willing to learn new skills, work well alone and as part of a team. Extremely well-organised, detail-oriented, and friendly with a strong focus on quality and customer service. The successful applicant must have a high degree of accuracy and be self-sufficient to excel in this role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Barcoding, receipting, and preparing specimens as they arrive at the laboratory.
  • Entering patient and test details accurately into the system.
  • Answering telephones and handling enquiries professionally.
  • Work well under pressure and manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a high degree of accuracy

  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
  • A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with good record-keeping skills.
  • The ability to work independently and able to participate in on-call and out-of-hour shifts as per the roster provided.
  • Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
