Job summary

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children in Tokoroa seeks a dedicated Social Worker for a fixed-term assignment through March 2027. You will listen to tamariki and rangatahi, assess needs, and support whānau to access services.

The role focuses on culturally responsive practice and collaboration with communities to improve outcomes. You will conduct full assessments, develop plans, and advocate for resources, while maintaining strong court and case documentation.

Qualifications

• Full, clean driver’s licence.
• Full registration with NZ Social Work Registration Board (SWRB).
• Current practicing certificate.
• Empathy, patience and ability to see past what someone may be struggling with.
• Experience in child protection sector, preferably in NZ.
• Ability to analyse and prepare social work and other plans (e.g. financial).
• Sound judgement and organisational skills.
• Ability to manage risk and make tough decisions.
• Excellent verbal communication and ability to adapt to audience.
• Strong written documentation skills (court reports, case notes).

Responsibilities

• Hear tamariki and rangatahi voices and support them or their whānau to make positive changes.
• Work with diverse cultural groups and people from different backgrounds.
• Complete full assessments on the tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.
• Facilitate hui to support whānau to grow their capacity to care for tamariki and rangatahi.
• Plan and deliver interventions to maintain tamariki and rangatahi within their whānau.
• Collaborate with community partners, NGOs and state sector agencies.
• Advocate for tamariki and rangatahi to ensure they have necessary support and resources.
