Job summary

Lodestone Energy is seeking a Market Risk Lead to sit at the crossroads of markets, trading, finance and risk. You will own Lodestone’s Risk & Portfolio Management framework and risk policies, providing independent insight to senior management.

The role reports to the GM Wholesale with access to the CFO, and involves developing models, dashboards and reporting to scale Lodestone as it grows in New Zealand’s energy landscape.

Qualifications

• Experience in trading, financial markets, commodities, risk, treasury, finance or a similarly analytical environment.
• Experience buying, selling, analysing or managing financial or commodity contracts would be highly valuable.
• Strong financial modelling and forecasting capability.
• Excellent Excel skills and confidence working with large or complex datasets.

About the Role

As our Market Risk Lead, you’ll sit at the intersection of markets, trading, finance and risk — providing the independent insight and challenge that helps us understand our positions, manage risk and make good commercial decisions.

Reporting to the GM Wholesale, with a direct reporting line and access to the CFO, this role operates independently from both the Wholesale trading function and Finance. You’ll own Lodestone’s Risk & Portfolio Management control framework and relevant wholesale risk policies, providing an independent view of our market positions, exposures and risk to senior management.

This is a role for someone who enjoys getting into the numbers, figuring out what they’re telling you, challenging them when they don’t stack up, and then communicating that clearly to the people making decisions.

You’ll work closely with our GM Wholesale and CFO, with exposure to senior leadership and our Audit & Risk Committee. You’ll also have the opportunity to build and improve the models, reporting and frameworks we need as Lodestone continues to scale.

We’re looking for someone who can:

Build, own and evolve our wholesale market risk framework, policies and controls.

Analyse trading positions, hedging, market exposure, liquidity and counterparty risk.

Independently review and challenge positions, valuations, assumptions and reporting, escalating where information is unsupported, inadequately evidenced or inconsistent with policy.

Develop financial, forecasting and risk models that turn complex market data into useful insights.

Own reporting across energy margin, revenue, positions and commercial performance.

Analyse what’s driving performance — including price, volume, generation, demand, hedging and customer mix.

Provide independent oversight and validation of trading positions, pricing and settlements.

Help develop our approach to credit risk, pricing and treasury risk.

Improve and automate reporting, dashboards and risk processes.

Present an independent view of wholesale risk and control clearly and confidently to senior stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring

We’re open-minded about where you’ve gained your experience. You might already be working in energy, treasury or market risk. Equally, you could come from a commodities, financial markets, broking or trading environment and be looking for a role where your analytical skills can be applied to a new kind of challenge.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

Experience in the New Zealand electricity market would be useful, but it isn’t essential. We’re more interested in strong underlying capability, curiosity and the appetite to learn.
