Reporting to the Service Manager, the Marine Technician possesses expert knowledge in the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of Mercury, Yamaha and Suzuki marine engines and systems. As a Marine Technician, you will be responsible for ensuring that vessels powered by Mercury, Yamaha or Suzuki engines are operating safely, efficiently, and in accordance with manufacturer specifications. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with a passion for marine technology and a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Engine Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of Mercury outboard, inboard, and sterndrive engines.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to engine performance, electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, and propulsions.
- Conduct engine tune-ups, oil changes, fuel filter replacements, and other routine services as per Mercury specifications.
- Strong understanding of onboard AC & DC electrics/accessories
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Use specialized diagnostic tools, including Mercury's proprietary systems, to identify issues and provide accurate repairs.
- Read and interpret engine diagnostics codes and service manuals to ensure precise and efficient repairs.
- Collaborate with customers and the service team to provide updates on repair status and explain technical issues in layman’s terms.
- Installation & Commissioning:
- Install new Mercury engines and marine systems, ensuring proper fitment, wiring, and alignment.
- Test and commission engines post-installation to confirm they meet safety and performance standards.
Customer Service & Support
- Communicate effectively with customers to understand their service needs, provide estimates, and recommend solutions.
- Advise customers on preventive maintenance to enhance engine performance and longevity.
- Deliver high levels of customer satisfaction by ensuring repairs are completed on time and to the highest quality.
Record Keeping & Documentation
- Maintain detailed records of all service and repair work, including parts used, labor performed, and recommendations for future service.
- Complete service documentation and warranty claims in accordance with Mercury guidelines.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all safety protocols when working with engines, tools, and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental and maritime regulations.
- Keep the workspace clean, organized, and safe for both the technician and customers.
- Ability to operate boats safely and confidently
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school certification in marine mechanics or a related field preferred.
- Mercury Marine certifications or equivalent training in Mercury engines is highly desirable.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience as a marine technician, specifically with Mercury, Yamaha, and Suzuki outboard is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years hands-on experience with MerCruiser engines/Transom assemblies and Outdrives is preferred.
- Proficient in the use of diagnostic tools and software related to Mercury engines (e.g., Mercury CDS G3).
- Expertise in Mercury engine maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of marine electrical systems, fuel systems, and engine cooling systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, service manuals, and schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and fix complex engine issues.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
- Good communication skills to interact with both team members and customers.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working in varying outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
Additional Requirements:
- Personal basic hand tools required.
- Valid Light Truck driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel to customer locations for on-site repairs, when necessary.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, depending on workload.
