Job summary

Brewers Guild in Lincoln, NZ, seeks an experienced Head Brewer to lead independent operation of our 600L brewery. You will oversee beer production from raw materials to packaging, ensuring consistency and quality across our range.

You will manage CIP, cellar equipment, inventory, and health and safety; solo brewing experience is essential. NZ residency or valid NZ work visa is required.

Qualifications

• 3+ years professional brewery experience.
• Brewing qualification (IBD or other) preferred.
• Experience brewing cask-conditioned ale.
• Good understanding of recipe development.
• Strong grasp of quality and spoilage issues in beer.
• Proven solo brewing experience with brewhouse operations.
• Ability to lift heavy loads and work safely without direct supervision.
• Strong problem-solving skills for equipment/process issues.
• Good time-management to juggle multiple production steps daily.
• Strong commitment to health and safety.

Responsibilities

• Operate 600L brewery and packaging autonomously.
• Source and manage raw materials; monitor inventory.
• CIP and maintain brewhouse/cellar equipment safely.
• Monitor brew conditions and quality control processes.
• Oversee health and safety practices in the brewery.
• Assist in brewery maintenance and liaise with engineers.
• Troubleshoot equipment or process issues independently.

The Laboratory is a quirky boutique brewpub and restaurant offering ‘good beer’, ‘good food’ and ‘good times’ in Lincoln. We cater to the local community, a loyal base of regular customers and attract guests from all over Selwyn & Christchurch City seeking a unique experience and convivial atmosphere.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic & experienced Head Brewer to join our team.

The Role
Independent operation of a 600L brewery, encompassing all aspects of beer production and packaging, including:

• Beer Production in all forms, from raw material selection/ordering through to packaging and everything in between
• Operate, CIP (clean-in-place), and maintain brewhouse and cellar equipment safely on your own
• Inventory and Quality Control
• Monitoring of Brew Conditions
• Health and Safety Management
• Monitoring and Assisting in Brewery Maintenance
• Mechanical troubleshooting and assisting in-house and external Engineers with repairs / maintenance

The Person

Attributes you will have:

• 3+years professional brewery experience
• Brewing qualification (IBD or other) preferred
• A good level of understanding in recipe development
• Experience brewing cask-conditioned ale
• A clear understanding of key quality and spoilage issues in beer
• Proven solo brewing experience with a strong grasp of brewhouse operations
