Job summary

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is seeking an Intermediate Developer to join our Payments domain. This hands-on role covers the full delivery lifecycle from requirements through to production support, collaborating with product owners, analysts and platform teams to deliver reliable payment solutions.

You will work with Java, RESTful services, Spring Boot, and modern CI/CD practices, contribute to tests and documentation, and help modernise legacy systems within a fast-paced, collaborative team.

Qualifications

  • Commercial software development experience in a team environment.
  • Strong experience with Java and RESTful services.
  • Experience with Spring Boot.
  • Knowledge of automated testing, clean code, debugging and version control.
  • Familiarity with Maven or Gradle build tooling and dependency management.
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines like Jenkins or Spinnaker and containerised applications with Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Break down requirements, estimate work, identify risks and make practical technical decisions.
  • Diagnose and resolve defects and production incidents using logs, metrics, and structured troubleshooting.
  • Design and develop APIs, write clean maintainable code, and produce system documentation.
  • Integrate services with downstream systems, event streams, databases and payment providers.
  • Write automated unit, integration and contract tests; contribute to test automation.
  • Resolve production incidents and participate in on-call rotations; collaborate with stakeholders to meet client needs and security standards.

This is a hands‑on role for someone who enjoys working across the full delivery lifecycle: understanding a problem, designing and implementing a solution, testing it thoroughly, releasing it safely, and supporting it in production.

What are 5dayto day tasks the person in this role will complete?
  • Work with the team to break down requirements, estimate work, identify risks and make practical technical decisions.Diagnose and resolve defects and production incidents, using logs, metrics, traces and a structured troubleshooting approach
  • Contribute to application design and development including API specification design, writing clean maintainable code, production of system and programme documentation as well as ongoing maintenance
  • Integrate services with downstream systems, event streams, databases, payment providers and other platform capabilities
  • Write automated unit, integration and contract tests and contribute to test automation.
  • Resolve production incidents by diagnosing issues, testing and implementing a fix. Involvement in the on‑call roster is essential.
  • Collaborate with product owners, analysts, testers, platform teams and other technical and non‑technical stakeholders to ensure applications meet client needs, security standards and practices.

We build and support applications that play a vital part in the Payments ecosystem. Working with front end and downstream applications to develop, support and maintain payment systems will be a critical part of the role.

We are embarking on a modernisation journey to replace legacy systems with Enterprise applications with plenty of challenges and opportunities to learn!

What attributes will this person displayin order to be successful in this role?
  • Commercial software development experience in a team environment.
  • Strong experience with Java and practical experience building RESTful services.
  • Experience with Spring Boot framework.
  • A sound understanding of automated testing, clean code, debugging and version control.
  • Familiarity with Maven or Gradle build tooling and dependency management.
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines like Jenkins or Spinnaker and the practices required to deliver changes safely.
  • An understanding of containerised applications and Kubernetes, or the ability to learn those quickly.
  • The ability to investigate issues methodically and explain technical problems in clear language.
  • A security‑conscious approach to handling financial data, authentication, authorisation and sensitive integrations.
  • Collaborative mindset, a proactive attitude and ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to speak with technical and non-technical audience.
  • Curiosity to learn, willingness to speak up and contribute to the strategic vision of the team.
